LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has condemned the MK67 billion expenditure at State Residences under former President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration, describing it as excessive and unacceptable.
CDEDI Executive Director Namiwa made the remarks at a press conference in Blantyre, calling for investigations into the spending, which was revealed by Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha in the 2025/2026 Mid-Year Budget Review Statement.
“Cdedi is shocked by the revelations of excessive spending at State Residences, especially at a time when Malawians are struggling to meet their basic needs,” Namiwa said. “We demand a thorough investigation into this matter and anyone found to have been involved in wrongdoing should be prosecuted.”
Activist Asabuni Phiri backed Cdedi’s call, saying the excessive spending was a clear example of the Chakwera administration’s lack of accountability and disregard for the welfare of Malawians.
The activists have also appealed to international organisations to desist from engaging with Chakwera until he is cleared of any atrocities committed under his regime.
The government has announced plans to audit the funds, with Minister Mwanamvekha describing the situation as “abnormal and troubling”.
