MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Vice President Dr Saulos Claus Chilima on Sunday postponed his meeting with heads of parastatals in the Northern Region of Malawi in the wake of rising cases of Covid-19 in the country.
According to a press statement that the Office of the Vice President released on July 12, 2020, the meeting has been postponed until a later date, following the announcement of the prevention measures by the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 last Friday.
“Vice President, Dr Saulos Chilima, who is also the Minister of Economic Planning and Development and Public Sector Reforms, has postponed to a later date an interface meeting he was scheduled to hold on Monday 13th July, 2020 in Mzuzu with the leadership of Northern Region based parastatal organisations and District Councils in adherence to guidelines released by government stopping large gatherings in the wake of an upsurge in the wake of Covid-19 cases in the country,” reads part of the statement.
The statement has further disclosed that the Office of the Vice President has noted that the Mzuzu meeting would have attracted more participants as it would have brought together northern region based District Councils, parastatals CEOs and their Directors of Finance hence the postponement to a later date.
The presidential taskforce on Covid-19 released stricter prevention measures against the sudden increase of numbers of positive cases of Covid-19 in the country. Among them is the ban of all social gatherings in markets, entrainment and other public places.
Malawi, which is now the second hardest hit by Covid-19 from South Africa in the Southern part of the continent, has now over 2, 000 positive cases with 33 deaths
