CHITIPA (MaraviPost)–In an effort to curb drugs theft in public hospitals, Malawi President Peter Muthalika has ordered government to fire officers found stealing hospital drugs in the country.

The President’s sentiments come hot on the heels of an increase in drug theft in the country’s public hospital.

Speaking during a political rally on Wednesday in Chitipa district, Mutharika said lack of stiff punishment to the perpetrators is hampering the process of dealing with the malpractice.

“Today and with this government, I want to end the malpractice of stealing government drugs in the public hospital,” said Muthalika.

“I have seen that officers continue stealing drugs in the hospitals because government or the judiciary gave suspension or fines to the culprits,” said Muthalika.

However, “starting from today I order government to fire all the culprits and that the Judiciary should also give them tough Penalty.”

Mutharika also challenged the suspects that will want to sue government once fired saying “I am ready for you”

He then assured the country that his government will make sure that the health sector is improving to prevent deaths from curable diseases.
