Hail storms render Malawi’s Mchinji Mlonyeni Primary School pupils destitute

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Stormy rains and hailstorm that blew off Mlonyeni Primary School’s classrooms roof in Mchinji on Monday, January 3, 2022 have rendered over 700 pupils destitute.

This comes as the 2022 school calendar opened on Tuesday, January 4, 2021 across the country.

According to the report released by the Relief and Rehabilitation office in Mchinji district, states that classrooms for Standards 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 have had their roofs completely blown off and has since recommended urgent rehabilitation.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer for Mchinji, Violet Jimu says the stormy rains and hailstorm also affected 407 families in the Traditional Authorities (T.As) Mlonyeni and Mavwere, where households lost materials such as beddings, food items, domestic animals, and injured two people.

Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs has distributed relief items such bags of maize, plastic papers, beans and salt to the affected families.
