IGA rolls out a national good governance campaign

International Group Association of Malawi (IGA) has rolled out a national good governance campaign to promote transparency and accountability among the duty bearers in the country.

The campaign wants to end inequality and poverty, particularly for women and girls, promote access to information and educate the citizen on how to express their rights in a democratic society.

 

The Executive Director for IGA James Moyo speaking in exclusive interview with the Maravi post disclose that the campaign originate on the grounds that the citizens ’basic rights and rights freedoms guaranteed by the constitution of Malawi are being endangered by lack of adherence to the rule of law.

He said: “We have partner with National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and UKAid on issues related to democracy and governance and on youth outreach to improve country’s economic woes. The socioeconomic problems is because of dysfunctional of political settlement among other factors”

He also reveals that recognizing community struggle against oppression, manipulation, exploitation, inequality and low levels of access to essential public information that have threatened the very existence of  constitutional rights hence embarking on the campaign.

Director for Planning for Lilongwe District Council Peter Jimusole in a separate interview admitted that Malawi is in a funding crisis following the withdrawal of direct budget support. Therefore, he said the Council and the Lilongwe Civil Society Network (LICSONET) is desirous of cooperating in the field of local governance and development; hence need to strengthen the capacity of Civil Society Organization like IGA.

IGA Malawi through Citizens’ Manifesto of 2016-2019 has completed a social contract with Members of Parliament like Patricia Mkanda, Chrissy C. Tembo and Lazarus Chakwera, Mrs. Neveless Kamchacha Councilor and Mr. Gideon Masache, Councilor being duty bearers on the one hand the Citizens of Lilongwe North West Constituency, Lilongwe North Constituency.
