It is no secret that all signs are pointing to former President Joyce Banda being the number one target of the Cashgate prosecutions. Rumors are circulating in Blantyre that Ant Corruption Bureau (ACB) has issued warrant of arrest for the former President. While we cannot confirm these rumors many people in the know believe it’s just a matter of time before one is issued.
Many people point to the so called close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of the 23 meetings Joyce Banda had with Lutepo, that the government submitted to the graft bursting body. Footage or logs delivered to ACB appear to at least back part of the story told barely a week ago by Cashgate Chief suspect, Oswald Lutepo who implicated Banda on Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) in the Cashgate scandal, saying the former Head of State was the “main beneficiary” of the money he reportedly stole from Government, saying the former president played conduit to the cashgate scandal.
While many people in Blantyre and in the capital Lilongwe do not totally believe Mr. Lutepo’s story there are so many interactions with Lutepo and Joyce Banda at so many levels that former President Joyce Banda will need to make a very convincing statement to absolve herself of these damaging accusations.
Currently the ACB has entered the third day of strike and likely not actively investigating the cashgate cases until a settlement is reached with government.
