MWANZA (MaraviPost)—The Malawi court in the boarder and southern district of Mwanza on Thursday, June 30, sentenced an 18 year-old young man to 10 years in jail with hard labor for impregnating a 15 year-old girl.Edwin Kaunda, Mwanza Police Stations Spokesperson confirmed to Maravi Post the jail term sentence of Allan Willard after the court found him guilty of the offense which he committed at Chikolosa village in the district .
According to Kaunda, the court heard that the convict fell in love with the young girl on May 5, 2016 in which the two lover birds were engaging in unprotected sex that eventually ended up in the girl getting pregnant.
Kaunda said upon the victim’s mother, Florence Peter, noting some changes in her daughter’s body appearance; she questioned the child who remained silent on the matter and later disappeared from the compound.
“After a few minutes, Florence called again the daughter for further questioning. It was discovered that the victim was away from home. The mother however thought that the daughter had gone for playing. She was shocked to learn that the girl never returned home up to around 8pm. Eventually, Florence reported the issue to Village headman Chikolosa who instructed community members to go searching for the girl.
“Finally, the victim was found on June 18, in the house of Willard. When asked as to why the girl was in the house, the convict openly challenged the community members that the victim was his wife. Thereafter both the girl and the convict were taken to Mwanza Police where Allan was placed in police cell while the girl was referred to Mwanza District Hospital where medical results revealed that she was one month pregnant.
“On June 23, Allan appeared before Mwanza First Grade Magistrate Court. Although he pleaded not guilty to the defilement charge, His worship Ran well Mangazi sentenced him to 10 years in jail with hard labor after Police prosecutor Sub/Inspector Jane Juma successfully paraded three witnesses against Willard. And while passing the judgment, His worship Mangazi said that the convict didnt deserve leniency because what he did to the young girl wasn’t acceptable to the society and that her future was in disarray,” said Kaunda.
Willard hails from Minjale village, Sub Traditional Authority (T.A) Govati in Mwanza district.
