Malawi Flames’ AFCON dreams dim after two consecutive losses

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Football Team, commonly known as the Flames, faces an uphill battle in their quest to qualify for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) following two disappointing losses in their opening matches of the qualifiers.

The Flames, who had entered the Afcon qualifying rounds with hopes of making a strong showing, were dealt consecutive blows by their opponents, leaving them teetering on the edge of elimination.

These defeats have not only placed the Flames at the bottom of their group but also significantly lowered their chances of progressing to the tournament proper.

Malawi’s qualifying campaign began on a sour note with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Guinea.

Despite the team’s efforts, the Flames struggled to find their rhythm, particularly in midfield, where possession was frequently lost.

Guinea capitalized on these mistakes and scored the winning goal in the second half, leaving Malawi with little time to mount a comeback.

This first loss was seen as a wake-up call, but there was hope that the Flames could turn things around in their second game.

The Flames’ second outing proved even more frustrating, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mozambique.

In this match, Malawi showed glimpses of their attacking prowess, with Gabadinho Mhango scoring a brilliant goal.

However, defensive lapses cost the team dearly, allowing Mozambique to score twice and walk away with all three points.

This second defeat left the Flames at the bottom of their qualification group, with zero points from two matches and a daunting task ahead if they are to keep their Afcon hopes alive.

A combination of tactical errors, poor defensive coordination, and a lack of consistency in front of goal has been pinpointed as the key factors behind Malawi’s dismal start to the qualifiers.

Head coach Patrick Mabedi has come under increasing pressure to find solutions as the Flames struggle to regain their footing.

One major issue is the team’s lack of depth, particularly in the midfield and defensive areas.

While the Flames have several promising talents, they often seem over-reliant on a few key players such as Mhango and Gerald Phiri Jr., making them predictable to opponents.

With two losses in the bag, Malawi’s path to qualification has become narrow.

The Flames will need to win all their remaining matches and hope for favorable results in other fixtures to stand a chance of qualifying for Afcon 2025.

Fans remain hopeful that the Flames can pull off an unlikely comeback, but it is clear that the team has a mountain to climb.

The road ahead will not be easy, and the Flames must quickly find a way to address their weaknesses if they are to revive their Afcon dreams.

Malawi’s journey to the 2025 Afcon is hanging by a thread after their opening losses in the qualifiers.

With mounting pressure on both players and coaching staff, the Flames must dig deep to keep their hopes alive.

While the situation is dire, football is unpredictable, and a few strong performances could still turn things around.

However, if the Flames fail to adjust quickly, their dreams of competing in the 2025 Afcon will likely be extinguished.
