Malawi hailed for eliminating child labour in tea sector

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has commended Malawi for successfully eliminating child labour in the tea sector.

Speaking during the International Tea Day commemoration in Thyolo on Saturday,ILO Director Wellington Chibebe noted that this achievement will enable Malawi’s tea to compete favourably in the global market.

On his part,Labour Minister Peter Dimba highlighted the tea industry’s significant contribution to Malawi’s economy, employing 60,000 people and generating USD100 million annually.

Dimba assured continued government support for the sector.

Tea Association of Malawi(TAM ) Chairperson Sangwani Hara welcomed the revised Child Labour Policy, emphasizing the industry’s commitment to maintaining a child-labour-free environment.

He said the policy is expected to further improve the sector’s performance and reputation.
