Atlanta (MaraviPost): Malawians in North America affected by the devastation they have seen in their homeland have joined hands to raise funds to support family and country men who have been devasted by cyclone Freddy.
In a zoom meeting attended by many across the states, they planned and discussed the best way to undertake this massive effort.
The meeting was led by Pastor Ella Mtenje well known for her community leadership in the Atlanta community. Also, in attendance was Siting Kachipande, Lawrence Matengula from Austin Texas and Dr Linda Semu community organizer in the DC area.
The grouping has created a go fund page. On the go fund page it says:
At least 200 people have been confirmed dead with several others missing after Cyclone Freddy, the longest-lasting storm on record, ripped through Southern Malawi. It is causing flash floods and mudslides that swept homes – in some cases, entire villages – leaving thousands with no shelter, food, or sanitation. Freddy also caused severe damage to infrastructure such as roads and bridges, further impacting relief efforts. Several essential buildings such as hospitals and clinics have been flooded with water. The spreading of floodwaters is also poised to exacerbate an ongoing cholera outbreak that has already killed more than 1,600 people in the past year. There is an urgent need for assistance in the affected areas. We are asking for you to help by making a tax-deductible donation to assist the flood survivors.
