Malawi’s HIV/AIDs CSOs petition Parliament over Bactrim shortage

LILONGWE (MaraviPost)-The country’s Civil society organisation working on HIV/Aids wants Parliament to resolve the shortage of bactrim in government hospitals risking persons living with HIV prone to disease .

The CSOs include Malawi Network of people living with HIV/AIDS,(MANET +) National Association for people living with HIV/AIDS (NAPHAM) Malawi interfaith Aids Association (MIAA) and Coalition of women Living with HIV/AIDS+(COWLHA).

Kaferakhande petitions Parliament

On behalf of the CSOs, Malawi interfaith Aids association (MIAA) MIAA Executive Director Pilira Kafenkhande said persons living with HIV risk to get malaria and tuberculosis in absence of Bactrim and meningitis.

Kafenkhande said they strongly believe that there was thorough assessment and studies to include Bactrim in HIV/AIDS treatment and is taking on daily basis aimed at achieving best results of ART drugs.

She said Parliament should start allocating resources in the national budget towards cost of essential drugs like Bactrim and antibiotics.

She call upon the august house to ensure central medical stores recapitalization comes to fruition and in all district heath offices.

Receiving the petition,Vice Chairperson for parliamentary committee on health, Ishmael Grant promised the petitioners to present their grievances to the speaker.

On her part, Monica Thobwa living with HIV/AIDS asked government to intervene soon as their lives are at stake to chronic diseases as Bactrim helps them to fight immunity deficiency.
