The Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security has summoned Inspector General of Police Merlene Yolamu to explain the recent surge in panga knife attacks on innocent Malawians.
The committee’s chairperson, Salim Bagus, expressed deep concern over the police’s inaction despite the alarming rise in violent incidents.
Bagus told Zodiak that it’s unfortunate these thugs seem to be powerful enough to attack even members of parliament without facing any consequences.
This lack of accountability has sparked widespread outrage and fear among Malawians.
The situation has prompted Sylvester Namiwa, Executive Director of the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI), to warn the perpetrators to tread carefully.
Namiwa cautioned that the individuals protecting them will not remain in power forever, implying that there may be political backing behind the violence.

The recent attacks have targeted both ordinary citizens and high-profile individuals, including members of parliament.
The police’s failure to apprehend the perpetrators has raised questions about the effectiveness of the country’s security apparatus.
Yolamu’s summons comes at a time when the country is grappling with rising insecurity and violence.
The committee’s move is seen as a step towards addressing the concerns of Malawians and ensuring that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.
As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, the issue of security is likely to take center stage.
The government and law enforcement agencies will be under increasing pressure to demonstrate their ability to protect citizens and maintain law and order.
The coming days will be crucial in determining how the government and law enforcement agencies respond to the growing security concerns.
As Malawians await Yolamu’s explanation, many are hoping for concrete actions to address the violence and restore a sense of security in the country.
