Pres. Mutharika denies to take action against maize-gate suspects without evidence

As Malawians are demanding the firing of the top officials allegedly to be involved in the K26 billion maize-gate to pave way for objective investigation, President Peter Mutharika has vehemently denied to take heed of the public demands, arguing he cannot fire any maize-gate suspect without evidence.

Mutharika on Saturday vowed to deal with any person involved in the Zambia rotten maize deal without looking at the status or name of the individuals if people bring evidence.

According to Mutharika Malawians should not expect him firing any maize-gate suspect from his or her position without evidence.

He said that is why he established the commission of inquiry to investigate what really transpired on the ground and then come up with an action.

“I will not and I cannot take any action against maize-gate suspect out of suspicion. I will need evidence before taking action,” said Mutharika.

While observing the importance of maize to the country, Mutharika asked Malawians to wait for the evidence from the commission of inquiry and stop pressurizing.

“I know that lives of Malawians depend on maize and that everyone is eager to know what really happened on the maize deal but I urge you to be calm,” he said.

In her remarks, chairperson for the commission retired chief justice Anastasia Msosa asked Malawians to have trust in them.

However, some Malawians including the political pundits and some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) demand the inclusive commission of inquiry.

They are also asking President Mutharika to fire Agriculture Minister George Chaponda and ADMARC boss Foster Mulumbe to pave way for the investigation.

However, Chaponda rubbished the call saying he is innocent.
