LILONGWE- (MaraviPost)– The leadership of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) on Monday challenged SADC for embracing the embattled Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Jane Ansah into the just commenced electoral commission forum conference in Blantyre.
HRDC Chairperson Timothy Mtambo expressed worrisome over the Ansah involvement in the conference arguing that the latter mismanaged Malawi polls hence no need to part of the conference.
He therefore said the SADC meeting has betrayed Malawians who are agitating the MEC chair, Jane Ansah to step down.
Addressing the news conference Monday afternoon HRDC announced that will hold demonstration from September 25 to 27 September in Blantyre.
Billy Mayaya, HRDC member said that the planned demonstrations will start from upper stadium up to Mount Soche hotel where the SADC meeting will be held.
” We intend to read out the petition to the SADC chairperson who will be around at that meeting, we also intend to seek electoral justice pertaining to elections around the region specifically the 2019 elections”, he said
Mayaya also said that they want to make sure that Justice Dr Jane Ansah resigns as people demand.
They expect the SADC to be up holding democratic values and principles which include the right to demonstrate.
