The University Council of Malawi has on Tuesday announced its position on the school fees issue as demanded by the students. According to the council’s statement, they will be no lessening fees despite the students’ protest.UNIMA council spokesperson Peter Mitunda asked the students who cannot manage to afford the current fees to report to the authority.
“As UNIMA council our stand is the same. We shall not reduce the school fees as demanded by our students,” said Mitunda.
“This is because of the value of the kwacha and we therefore urge students who claim that they cannot afford to report to their authorities,” he added.
According to Mitunda, the authorities will help to find bursary for such students.
However, students are yet to respond to the statement but there are some rumors that they will not buy the idea.
Government raised the fees from K900, 000 to K1.4 million for mature entry students, K400, 000 to generic students and K400, 000 to continuing students per annum.
The development angered the students who described it as an attack on the least privileged and was led to the protest in all UNIMA schools.
