DARFUR-(MaraviPost)-Tribal clashes in Sudan’s restive Darfur region between Arabs and non-Arabs have killed at least 40 people and wounded 58 others on Saturday and Sunday.
The West Darfur Doctors’ Committee disclosed the news in a statement on Monday, April 5th.
Reports indicate that the violence between the Arab Rizeigat tribe and the Masalit in Genena, the provincial capital of West Darfur province, started after the death of two people from the Masalit tribe who died under unclear circumstances.
The violence then extended to other neighborhoods of the city. The committee which is part of a nationwide independent body formed in 2016 representing the medical community added that on Sunday, armed men opened fire on an ambulance carrying wounded victims, wounding three healthcare workers.
Earlier this year, tribal violence in West Darfur and South Darfur provinces killed around 470 people and displaced over 120,000 people, mostly women and childre, AFP reported .
Sudan is in the midst of a rocky transitional after an uprising which led the military to overthrow longtime autocratic President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.
The vast Darfur region was the scene of a bitter conflict that erupted in 2003, leaving around 300,000 people killed and 2.5 million displaced, according to the United Nations.
