Barcelona stuns Madrid in title race

Hundreds of Barcelona supporters celebrated Sunday at Las Ramblas as their team rallied to beat Real Madrid 4-3 despite Kylian Mbappé hat trick to move closer to La Liga title Sunday. Barcelona took a huge step to securing the Spanish league title with a 4-3 win over second-placed rival in a mesmerizing “Clasico” and opened a seven-point lead with three matches remaining.

Raphinha scored twice, and Lamine Yamal and Eric García added a goal each for Barcelona, which trailed 2-0 after Mbappé scored in the fifth and 14th minutes at Montjuic stadium. The hosts evened the match just over the half-hour mark, and went on to lead 4-2 at halftime in a sensational recovery. Mbappé completed his hat trick in the 70th but Madrid wasn’t able to come back in a likely fatal blow to its hopes of successfully defending its title.

Mbappé became the league’s leading scorer with 27 goals, two more than Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, who did not start on Sunday. The Catalan club has won every match against Madrid this season. It had already won 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the first league match in October, 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final in January, and 3-2 in the Copa del Rey final last month.

The result, which virtually ends Madrid’s hopes of finishing the season with a title, adds pressure on coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is rumored to be leaving the club to take over Brazi’s national team. Former Madrid player Xabi Alonso, who recently announced he is leaving Bayern Leverkusen is widely expected to be Madrid’s next coach.

PSG reaches Champions League final and will face Inter Milan for elusive title

Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday held off and defeated an inspired Arsenal 2-1 to reach the Champions League final against Inter Milan.

PSG reached the final of Europe’s elite tournament for just the second time in club history — it was runner-up five years ago — and did so in the first season following superstar Kylian Mbappé’s departure to Real Madrid.

The French club will try again for its first Champions League title when it faces Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich.

Three-time European champion Inter defeated Barcelona 7-6 on aggregate in one of the greatest semifinals in the competition’s history.

It took extra time, two astonishing comebacks and 13 goals to separate Barcelona and Inter and see the Italian club, which was a mere seconds away from elimination, prevail 7-6 on aggregate after winning another rollercoaster encounter 4-3 on Tuesday.

The PSG, which eliminated Aston Villa and Liverpool before sending Arsenal home, had lost to Borussia Dortmund at this stage last year and was beaten by Bayern Munich in the 2020 final.

Sadio Mane leaves Liverpool for Bayern

By Chisomo Phiri

LONDON-(MaraviPost)-Liverpool have agreed a 41 million euro (£35.1m) deal to sell their striker Sadio Mane to Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich.

Sadio Mane leaves Liverpool for Bayern

The Reds will get a fixed 32m euros (£27.4m) with an additional 6m euros based on appearances and 3m euros based on individual and team achievements.

Liverpool turned down two bids from Bayern before the two clubs settled on a move for the 30-year-old, whose deal with the Reds ran until next summer.

Mane joined Liverpool for £31m plus £2.5m in add-ons from Southampton in 2016.

Since then, he scored 90 Premier League goals for the Anfield club and finished last season with 23 goals in all competitions.

News of his departure follows Tuesday’s signing of Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez from Benfica for an initial £64m.

Alongside fellow forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, who are both 30, Mane has been integral to Liverpool’s success in recent years.

The trio helped the club win the Champions League in 2019 and then end a 30-year wait for the league title in the following season.

This has also been an exceptional year for Mane, who won the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal before helping Liverpool win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup and finish runners-up in the Premier League and Champions League.

Mane is expected to replace Robert Lewandowski at Bayern, with the Poland international set to lave the German club having been linked with a move to Spanish giants, Barcelona.
