By Chisomo Phiri

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPos)-Malawi Peace and Unity Commission(MPUC) Chairperson Bishop Mary Nkosi has cautioned chiefs in the country against designating ‘no-go zones’ for specific political parties, warning that such actions could escalate violence during the election period.

Speaking at a sensitization meeting in Zomba on Thursday, Bishop Nkosi emphasized the importance of chiefs remaining neutral and creating a level playing field for all political parties.

She said as gatekeepers, chiefs play a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in their areas.

Traditional Authority(T/A) Mizinga of Machinga welcomed the reminder and pledged to ensure that chiefs in his area remain impartial.

Mizinga also advised political parties to focus on their manifestos and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could fuel violence.

The meeting aimed to promote peaceful elections and encourage chiefs to play a proactive role in preventing violence during the campaign, election, and post-election periods.

MEC commissioner Mary Nkosi quits

Commissioner Bishop Mary Nkosi says she has not left Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) rather, she has gone on three weeks annual leave which coincides with the expiry of her and other commissioners’ contracts on June 2, 2020.

She said she has not gone on leave for some time and decided to take her leave days now.

“I have not resigned. It is just that my annual leave coincides with the expiry of my contract. How can I proceed on leave if I have left the institution?”

There have been calls for MEC Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah and the Commissioners to resign after the courts found them incompetent in the way they handled May 21, 2019 elections.
