Blantyre woman Charlotte Botha arrested for online fraud

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A 20-year-old woman, Charlotte Botha, has been arrested by police in Blantyre for allegedly engaging in online fraud.

Botha is accused of using her mobile phone to deceive multiple individuals, including influential people, by claiming to have had sexual relationships with them and demanding money in exchange for silence.

Preliminary investigations have revealed WhatsApp conversations allegedly linked to the fraudulent activities, with Botha using fake identities and impersonating individuals, including someone associated with the Mikozi social media page.

The authorities believe the activities were systematic, given the number of alleged victims.

Botha has appeared in court, denied the charges, and her case has been adjourned to February 6 for hearing. The act is contrary to Section 92 of the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act.

Doris Mwitha, Deputy Public Relations Officer, warned the public about the risks of online interactions and advised people to be cautious when sharing personal information or sending money to individuals.

This case highlights the growing concern over online fraud in Malawi, with authorities urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The police have not disclosed the identities of the alleged victims, citing privacy reasons.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify and bring to justice those involved in similar activities.
