Africa’s Creative Heavyweights Unite to Shape a Stronger Global Story of the Continent

Opportunity Africa launches pan-African Creative Council backed by leading communications, media and brand leaders

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, 26 March 2026 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/ – In line with Agenda 2063, the Opportunity Africa initiative has launched its Creative Council, bringing together Africa’s leading communications, media and marketing leaders to advance a narrative that contributes to building The Africa We Want.

It is a pan-African platform and movement designed to shift how the world sees Africa and how Africa sees itself, by amplifying the people, stories and institutions already shifting perceptions. It is a shared platform that brands, institutions and storytellers can align around to communicate a stronger, more unified story of Africa.

At a time when the global order is shifting and competition for capital, influence and attention is intensifying, perception matters as much as facts. For Africa, image is no longer a soft issue. It is a strategic one. The Creative Council has been established to help ensure Africa is defined by those building it.

The Council brings together senior leaders who have shaped narratives at national, regional and global levels. Their role is to guide the creative direction of the initiative, connect it to their continent-wide networks and ensure the initiative remains credible, relevant and culturally resonant across markets.

“This is exactly the kind of collaboration Africa needs to shape a narrative that reflects our aspirations under Agenda 2063 and builds The Africa We Want. In line with the mandate of the African Union Commission’s Information and Communication Directorate, this work will strengthen how we communicate the Union’s priorities and amplifies Africa’s voice. We encourage more partners to join this growing movement.” Faith Adhiambo, Communication Officer, Agenda 2063 African Union.

“It is a privilege for Africa No Filter to serve as secretariat and help steward this forward. It is unprecedented to see this level of expertise and collaboration coming together to build the narrative infrastructure Africa needs to reframe the continent,” said Moky Makura, Executive Director of Africa No Filter and co-chair of the Council.

Initial members of the Creative Council include senior leaders from TRACE, Africa Practice, the African Union, Brand South Africa, IC Publications, Alpha Media Holdings, X3M Ideas and other leading institutions across the continent.

Africa No Filter announces inaugural Council as it expands its reach on the continent and beyond.

DAKAR, Senegal, 09 December 2025-/African Media Agency(AMA)/-It takes a village to shift a narrative — and Africa No Filter’s village just got stronger.

Africa No Filter (ANF) today announced the formation of its inaugural Council: a collective of eight highly respected leaders whose expertise spans media, finance, philanthropy, law, advocacy and research. Their appointment signals a new chapter for the organisation, which is now an independent, African-led and registered entity in Mauritius after five years as a U.S-based project.

The ANF Council brings together people who have not only excelled in their fields, but who Moky Makura, Executive Director of Africa No Filter, deeply admires for the way they show up for the continent.

“Narratives shape everything, from policy and reputation to investment and opportunity,” Makura says. “As Africa No Filter steps into this new era of independence, this Council strengthens our governance and sharpens our strategic direction. These are people who understand the stakes, believe in Africa’s potential and are committed to ensuring that Africa tells its own, more truthful story.”

Over the last five years, Africa No Filter has committed more than US$7.5 million to the African creative and media ecosystem, supporting storytellers, researchers and platforms that challenge reductive, outdated portrayals of the continent.

Its work has attracted some of the world’s most influential funders, including the Gates Foundation and the Mastercard Foundation, alongside its founding funders – the Ford Foundation, Luminate and the Hilton Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, and Mellon Foundation – who continue to support ANF’s mission to shift global narratives about Africa.

At this pivotal moment, the Council will serve as a strategic sounding board and leadership body, strengthening governance, accelerating impact and expanding the organisation’s reach on the continent and beyond.

The members of the 2025 Africa No Filter Council are:

Richard Addy — a multi-award-winning strategist and co-founder of international audience strategy consultancy AKAS, recognised as one of the world’s Top 100 media experts.

Nousrath Bhugeloo — a seasoned senior executive in financial services and Executive Director and Chairperson at Nexus Global Financial Services.

Yacine Djibo — Founder and Executive Director of Speak Up Africa, whose advocacy has reshaped policy conversations on health, sanitation and sustainable development across the continent.

Ferdinand Mokete — Director at KPMG South Africa and MBA lecturer at Wits Business School, representing the next frontier of African economic leadership and governance excellence.

Françoise Moudouthe — CEO of the African Women’s Development Fund and founder of Eyala, an online platform amplifying African feminist voices.

Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard — Franco-Gabonese entrepreneur and founder of APO Group, an award-winning pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, listed among the Top 100 Most Influential Africans in 2023 and 2024.

Anshi Saminaden — Senior Legal Counsel at the African Leadership University, renowned for her leadership in institutional governance, negotiation and investment management.

Natasha Kofoworola Quist — Founder of Quest Advisory Africa, with over 25 years’ experience spanning humanitarian work, conservation, philanthropy and the private sector.

Each member brings a distinct lens, yet all share a common conviction: that Africa’s story must be told more fully, more fairly and by Africans themselves.

Yacine Djibo believes the future narrative must finally reflect reality — “a continent of creativity, innovation and possibility, where African voices define the story and inspire confidence, investment and ownership from within and beyond the continent.”

For Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, countering stereotypes is not only ethical, but strategic. By promoting authentic stories of progress, he says, “the media can unlock investment and help transform Africa’s economic prospects.”

Anshi Saminaden echoes this, pointing to the power of authentic storytelling to “direct investment and support to where they are most needed, unlocking Africa’s human power and transformation.”

Nousrath Bhugeloo noted that strong governance is part of how Africa tells its story, and that ANF’s commitment to building resilient, African-led institutions is as important as the narratives it amplifies.

With strengthened governance, expanded continental expertise and a growing global footprint, Africa No Filter’s transition to an independent entity marks far more than an organisational change. It is a statement of intent: a new era in which Africa commands its own narrative, on its own terms.

AI, data & cloud in focus as South African business, technology leaders gather

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 23 October 2025-/African Media Agency(AMA)/- South Africa’s business leaders, technology experts, and SAP partners gathered in Johannesburg today to explore how cloud, data, and AI innovations are reshaping the enterprise landscape and unlocking new growth opportunities for businesses.

Nazia Pillay, Managing Director: Southern Africa at SAP, said South African organisations are facing a turning point. “The convergence of data, cloud, and AI technologies presents an extraordinary opportunity to rethink how we operate, innovate, and grow. By combining new thinking with AI-enabled skills the latest technologies, companies across the region can unlock a new era of accelerated growth and innovation.”

Tech skills development has received renewed attention in recent times as companies rush to attract skilled workers that can unlock the potential of AI and other technologies in their businesses. Research conducted by SAP found that nine in ten African organisations are already experiencing negative impacts from a lack of AI skills, with consequences ranging from failed innovation initiatives and delayed implementations to an inability to take on new work. “This digital shift is empowering organisations to make faster, data-driven decisions, close the skills gap, and build more resilient, future-ready enterprises. We must equip our workforce with the right skills to fully harness the potential of these emerging technologies” added Genni Barnes, SAP Solution Architect at Nedbank.

Keynote speaker Professor Bonang Mohale, Chancellor of the University of the Free State and Chairperson of several large South African companies, believes South Africa’s success in the digital age depends on the country’s ability to lead with clarity and act with urgency. “Innovation is a necessity for national competitiveness. Collectively, we must ensure we’re not just adopting global technologies but adapting them to our unique context to create lasting value for our businesses, our people, and our economy.”

The comments were made at SAP Business Suite Innovation Day, part of a global event series that provide an exclusive introduction to SAP’s latest cloud applications and data-driven AI innovations, including SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Business AI. The event brought together customers, partners and innovators for wide-ranging discussions around best practices, learnings and insights for how AI can be embedded across businesses, powered by curated, contextual, and connected data

Stef De Mulder, Chief Revenue Officer for SAP Business Data Cloud & SAP Business AI, EMEA at SAP, said new advances in how organisations collect, manage and empower data is unlocking vast opportunities for AI-enabled growth and innovation. “By breaking down data silos and allowing businesses to govern and connect all their data, our new AI and data solutions provide real-time, context-rich insights to businesses where they need it most. With AI orchestration and seamless integration with platforms like Databricks, organisations can boost productivity, modernise their data landscape, and accelerate the development of intelligent applications that deliver measurable impact.”

According to Glazelle Pohl, Group IT Manager: Solution Delivery & PMO (product management office) at ABF Sugar, “many enterprises are rapidly embracing cloud computing, data analytics, and AI to reimagine how they operate, innovate, and expand. These technologies assist in unlocking new levels of productivity and efficiency but also allow access to entirely new business models and sustainable practices in the long term.”

Pillay adds that companies globally are increasingly adopting a clean core strategy, which SAP sees as a critical enabler for long-term innovation, agility, and cost efficiency. “The clean core approach is key to simplifying the enterprise landscape and ensuring companies can rapidly adopt new innovations with minimal disruption. It’s the foundation that allows AI, cloud and data solutions to deliver full value across every line of business.”

New Podcast ‘Future of Africa’ Amplifies the Voices of African Youth Re-shaping Our World

Launched by the African Union Youth Envoy, the United Nations Foundation, and The Elders in collaboration with The Global Dispatches Podcast.

NEW YORK, USA 12 August 2025 -/African Media Agency (AMA)/-The United Nations Foundation today announced the launch of Future of Africa, a new podcast series that amplifies young African voices in global policy conversations. Future of Africa is co-hosted by the African Union Youth Envoy, the UN Foundation and The Elders, in collaboration with the Global Dispatches Podcast.

Through a mix of personal storytelling and policy dialogue, the podcast tackles issues ranging from climate justice and financing for development to trust in democratic institutions and the future of education. As multilateralism faces a crisis of trust and relevance, Future of Africa offers a fresh model. By platforming conversations between global leaders and young African changemakers, the series explores how human stories can disrupt conventional thinking, build empathy across borders, and forge shared purpose around urgent global challenges.

Each episode pairs these emerging voices with statespeople and global policy experts in unscripted, intergenerational conversations designed to share innovative ideas and practical solutions with listeners.

This podcast is about amplifying the voices of young Africans who are building a new future for our continent and the world,” said Chido Mpemba, Advisor to the African Union Commission Chairperson. “This series is a reminder that stories, especially when led by young people, can humanize global challenges, challenge outdated assumptions, and help reimagine how international cooperation works for the next generation.”

Ethiopia’s opposition party denounces ban as threat to peace deal

After it lost its status as a political party, TPLF says the ban on its activities constitutes a “serious threat” to the peace process in Ethiopia.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has denounced the withdrawal of its political party status by the Electoral Commission, in a letter to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The party which ruled Ethiopia from 1991 to 2018, has been plagued by internal conflicts and has strained relations with Abiy Ahmed’s government.

The party says the ban puts the 2022 peace deal that ended two years of conflict in the northern Tigray region at risk.

In November 2022, members of the TPLF signed a peace agreement in Pretoria, South Africa, with representatives of the federal government. The conflict saw federal Ethiopian forces, supported by local militias and the Eritrean army pitted against TPLF rebels.

Authorities in Addis Ababa placed Tigray under lock and key, and humanitarian aid was blocked.

Tens of thousands of people were killed while millions were forced from their homes.

Missing South African journalist and partner confirmed dead

Human remains believed to be those of missing South African journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Precious Mdhluli have been discovered in Limpopo province, more than two months after they were last seen.

The bodies were found in a remote bush area and were in an advanced state of decomposition.

While DNA confirmation is still pending, media organisations say forensic teams have already identified the remains. Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the case. Authorities reportedly recovered stolen items, including furniture, appliances, and parts of a vehicle linked to the couple.

Ndlovu, founder of the Pretoria-based Capital Live radio station, had been missing with Mdhluli since 18 February. Their deaths have left the media community reeling.

“I am terribly sad. We held out hope… Our deepest condolences go out to the families,” said Elijah Mhlanga, chairperson of the African Media and Communicators Forum.

The case highlights South Africa’s persistent struggle with violent crime. The country recorded over 26,000 murders in 2024—an average of 72 killings per day.

Ralph Kasambara sides with PAC, rubbishes social commentator Henry Kachaje

Martha Chizuma
Martha Chizuma Rejected By PAC

Renowned lawyer and former Minister of Justice, Ralph Kasambara has scolded those criticizing or bad-mouthing the Public Appointment Committee (PAC) of Parliament for not confirming Martha Chizuma as Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Chizuma was appointed by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera two weeks ago and she appeared before members of the Committee at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe on Tuesday for confirmation.

But according to PAC Chairperson, Joyce Chitsulo, Chizuma needed to score at least 17 percent of out 25 during confirmation process to be confirmed as new ACB Director.

The Neno Parliamentarian also clarified that there was no voting as people are indicating but rather each member rated Chizuma independently and after adding the scores it could not reach the required score.

Chitsulo further told local media that everything was procedurally done [in accordance with law).

But the development has not gone down well with some section of the society, including the leadership of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition ( HRDC), who have resorted to holding demonstrations against PAC over the matter.

Meanwhile, Kasambara has particularly censured social commentator, Henry Kachaje over utterances considered by former Justice Minister as degrading to the MPs.

Kachaje wrote on his Facebook page; “Imagine: Setting up a panel of rats to vote on whether to bring a cat in the house…….”

Kachaje wrote on his Facebook page; “Imagine: Setting up a panel of rats to vote on whether to bring a cat in the house…….”

Reacting to the post, Kasambara cautioned Kachaje to exercise the freedom of expression with responsibility.

“To say the least, this is contempt of Parliament.  And I am certain this found its way onto Facebook in the heat of the moment.

“You are lucky it’s not Zambia or Uganda,” said Kasambara.

He further claimed that Parliamentarians deserve respect and that they voted according to their conscience after objectively assessing her performance.

“Had she been confirmed the social media would have been all praise for PAC. Just as they last time voted that the two beleaguered Election Commissioners were incompetent,” equally posted Kasambara on his official Facebook page along aside a screenshot of Kachaje’s post.

Raphael Kasambara
Kasambara- Answering charges of conspiracy to murder Mphwiyo

In a separate Facebook post, Kasambara stated that there is a good reason why the framers of the country’s Constitution chose to have separation of powers amongst the three branches of government, namely Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary.

He said the Constitution, which is Malawi’s supreme law, endows branches of government with independence in their execution of duties.

He said such independence can only be real when the occupants of those institutions are not intimidated threatened or enticed with some favors.

“Of late I have seen some judges being attacked on the decisions they make. Hear me correctly it is one thing to attack the decision and it is another to attack the person.

“Again, today we see read or hear about certain parliamentarians being attacked or bad mouthed because of the way they rated ACB director nominee.

“In both cases there are remedies provided by the constitution to deal with judges and MPs that fail to carry out their bible duties. Attacking or threatening them are not part of the solutions.

“The view of the majority is might but not always right,” contends Kasambara.

HRDC has planned to hold the demonstrations on Tuesday to express their displeasure over the development.

PAC Chairperson (Joyce Chitsulo) could not confirm nor deny that her Committee has rejected Chizuma’s appointment, saying the Speaker of Parliament is the one mandated to make such announcement.

She, however, indicated that any member of the committee can move her office to have the rating of Chizuma’s interview re-done.

“Yes, I am the Chairperson of the Committee, but I am not mandated to disclose the final results. We have sent the results to the Speaker, who will duly communicate to the country’s Presidency before announcing them,” said Chitsulo, who won the Parliamentary seat on Democratic Progressive Party ticket.
