New on HBO Max in December 2025 — The Full List of Movies and TV Shows

‘One Battle After Another’ (2025)

Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic adaptation of the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon has been the movie title on everyone’s lips this awards season, positioned as a top contender for taking home Best Picture gold at the upcoming Academy Awards. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as former revolutionary Bob Ferguson, who finds his radical past has come back to haunt him when his daughter is kidnapped by a long-forgotten nemesis.

Thrilling, paranoid and surprisingly hilarious, One Battle After Another is the perfect marriage of thought-provoking drama, high-stakes crime thriller, poignant drama and laugh-out-loud comedy. The movie has a little bit of everything and it pulls it all off beautifully, to the extent that it’s topped a number of “best of the year” lists, such as Rolling Stone, IndieWire and The Guardian. While being a highly entertaining indictment of our current moment in history, it’s also a moving story about a father and daughter that holds hope in its heart.

‘Atomic Blonde’ (2017)

With the imminent collapse of the Berlin Wall, Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron), the most elite agent in MI6, races to find a crucial document that is about to be smuggled into the West. Broughton travels to the heart of Berlin to search for the priceless dossier and goes up against a ruthless espionage ring, but despite her arsenal of deadly skills, she finds herself surrounded by enemies that are closing in on her. Broughton meets up with David Percival (James McAvoy), an embedded station agent who helps her fight her way through the mission.

Director David Leitch (John Wick) gives Atomic Blonde a nostalgic, ’80s-inspired style and compelling Cold War atmosphere that make up for some weaker screenwriting decisions. Led by a simmering and sensual performance from Theron, the film features gorgeous, neon-tinged cinematography, kinetic fight sequences and balls-to-the-walls spy thriller action that makes the movie genuinely unmissable if you love ultra-violent action flicks.

‘Night and Day’ (1946)

This black-and-white romantic musical stars Cary Grant as real-life songwriter Cole Porter, who leaves to serve in World War I after his first stage show fails. But when he’s injured during battle, he ends up in a hospital where he meets a nurse named Linda Lee (Alexis Smith), and they begin to fall for each other. However, after Cole is discharged, he leaves Linda and returns to New York and resumes writing music. And though he eventually marries her, their courtship comes with its share of troubles.

5 Best New Movies to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Hulu, More (December 26-28)

It’s hard to go wrong with a movie starring the ever-charming Grant (North by Northwest, To Catch a Thief), and with the music of Cole Porter, Night and Day makes for a very sweet and entertaining viewing experience. While not the greatest exploration of one of America’s greatest musical talents, Night and Day is a charming, infectious, and romantic slice of classic Hollywood.

How to Watch the 2025 National Dog Show: Date, Time, Streamer, Dogs and More

With each Thanksgiving comes a few traditions almost everyone celebrates — traveling home to visit friends or family, the mass consumption of turkey and various calorie-filled side dishes and gazing at all the balloons in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

But there’s one other event that’s quickly become a part of everyone’s annual festivities — watching the parade of canines in the annual National Dog Show.

Now in its 24th year, the National Dog Show presents the finest dogs in the country. Who will take the crown this year? Watch With Us has everything you need to know about the 2025 National Dog Show, including the date, time, streaming options and more.

There are two hosts this year. David Frei, a professional dog breeder, will preside over the competition alongside Seinfeld actor and Dancing with the Stars alum John O’Hurley. Joining them is veteran NBC Sports personality Mary Carillo, who will provide commentary directly from the showroom.

A fun bit of trivia — Frei guest-starred on Sex and the City in a role he was born to play: himself! In the season 6 episode “The Cold War,” Frei played a judge at a dog show that Kristin Davis’ character, Charlotte York, was competing in with her beloved pooch, Elizabeth Taylor.

Who Won Last Year’s Competition?

Vito the Pug dominated the 2024 National Dog Show and won the top prize. Vito is the Meryl Streep of the canine world, having snagged the Best of Breed award at the AKC National Show and Best in Breed at the Westminster Dog Show in 2023.

Who Is Competing at the 2025 National Dog Show?

Over 2,000 dogs are expected to compete in this year’s edition, with over 200 breeds represented. Every dog is separated and placed into seven main groups: Terriers, Toy, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Working, Herding and Hound. Some popular breeds you can expect to see this year include collies, Boston terriers, Irish setters, akitas and more.

Is the National Dog Show Based on the 2000 Movie ‘Best in Show’?

It is! After the cult comedy premiered in 2000, NBC executive Jon Miller was inspired to start a real dog show like the one seen in the movie, minus all the outrageous contestants and inappropriate commentators.

“When Best in Show premiered, it gave audiences a hilarious and heartfelt look into the world of competitive dog shows — a world we proudly showcase every Thanksgiving,” said Miller.

If you haven’t watched Best in Show, now’s as good a time as any. The Christopher Guest movie is streaming on MGM+ and available to rent or purchase on Prime Video.

Global military expenditure tops $2.7 trillion in 2024 – Report

Countries spent a record $2.7 trillion on arms and weapons systems last year, the fastest rise in military expenditure since at least the end of the Cold War in 1989.

A report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) says that the figure shows an increase of just over 9 percent from 2023.

It said Europe spent the biggest on the military, fueled in part by the war in Ukraine.

SIPRI notes that Russia’s spending went up 38 percent to an estimated $149 billion, dwarfing that of Ukraine which stood $64.7 billion.

Germany was central and western Europe’s biggest spender in 2024, splashing some $88 billion on arms.

The United States, by far the biggest spender, increased expenditure by 5.7 percent, reaching nearly a trillion dollars. Washington alone accounts for 37 percent of worldwide spending.

Collectively, members of the NATO war alliance spent $1.5 trillion.

Another notable increase was by Israel whose spending surged 65 percent to reach $45 billion as it continues its war on Gaza.

China only increased its defence budget modestly. The world’s second-largest economy’s military spending expanded by 7 percent to reach an estimated $314 billion, the report said..

US should abandon ‘outdated Cold War mentality’ bemoans China

Washington ought to avoid ‘playing up’ competition with Beijing, Foreign Ministryn laments

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning on Thursday accused President Joe Biden’s administration of clinging to an “outdated Cold War mentality” instead of pursuing “win-win cooperation” with Beijing. Discussing the new US national strategy at a regular press briefing, Mao said that her country sees no benefit “in any rhetoric or act that plays up geographical conflict or major power competition.”

We oppose the outdated Cold War mentality and zero-sum mindset,” she emphasized, referring to the way China is described in the new US strategy.

According to the document released by the White House on Wednesday, Washington views Beijing as “the only competitor with both the intent to reshape the international order and, increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military, and technological power to do it.”

Responding to this claim, Mao noted that “China’s development is fundamentally about the happiness of the people and rejuvenation of the nation.” The US, she argued, needs to follow principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and “win-win cooperation,” especially now, when “the world is undergoing changes unseen in a century.”

As the biggest developing and developed country, China and the US have a responsibility of defending world peace and stability and promoting economic prosperity and development,” she emphasized.

Confrontation will not benefit either Washington or Beijing, the ministry spokeswoman said, urging the US to bring its relations with China “back onto the track of sound and steady development.”

The foreign ministry official continued to criticize US strategy towards China the following day, this time commenting on new US export controls targeting China’s microchip industry.

Mao accused the US of “overstretching the national security concept and abuse of export control measures to wantonly hobble Chinese enterprises.”

The last few months have seen significant escalation of tensions between Washington and Beijing, primarily over the Taiwan issue. In retaliation to the controversial visit of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which Beijing viewed as a violation of the One-China policy, Beijing severed communication with Washington in a number of military and civilian areas. Pelosi’s visit also prompted the Chinese military to conduct large-scale military drills near the island.
