The recent remarks made by opposition Democratic Progress Party (DPP) legislator Sammer Suleiman at Bangwe Desert Ground in Blantyre directed at the Minister of Higher Education Dr Jessie Kabwila, are not only deeply disrespectful but also a disgrace to the DPP’s re-election campaign.
Suleiman comments amount to a personal attack on women, specifically targeting Dr Kabwila in an unbecoming manner.
To clarify, Trade Minister Vitumbiko Mumba was merely admiring Dr Kabwila’s beauty — a harmless observation — and not intending to demean her.
However, comparing Dr Kabwila to Mary Navicha is entirely inappropriate.
Dr Kabwila is a respected academic and a champion of academic freedom in Malawi.
In contrast, many women within the DPP ranks are not recognised by their professional achievements, but simply by the titles “Mrs” or “Miss”.
It is unwise — and indeed, politically damaging — for anyone to seek popularity through the public humiliation of women.
While the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) continues to focus on issue-based campaigning, the DPP appears increasingly lost, resorting instead to personal attacks, particularly targeting women from the podium.
We also wish to issue a stern warning to Suleiman whose Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) is in question.
MCP has no tolerance for those who seek to undermine the rights and dignity of women.
This conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values of inclusivity and respect that underpin our commitment to advancing women’s rights in Malawi.
As Malawi is going to polls, Suleiman sentiments on public forum to win voters to get in power is savage approach and uncivilised.
Malawians deserve a better leadership with clear vision beyond September 16 not partisan politics that has no basis.
