Gule Wamkulu: Malawi’s traditional dance needs reflection, reformation

By Twink Jones Gadama

In the central region of Malawi this week, a shocking incident unfolded involving the Chewa cult known as Gule Wamkulu.

An elderly man in his 80s was savagely flogged by members of this traditional group, who accused him of withholding rain.

Despite the man’s desperate pleas, those masked figures continued to mercilessly assault him, adding to the growing concern surrounding the Gule Wamkulu’s behavior.

The Gule Wamkulu has long been associated with its distinctive masquerades, but recent events raise serious questions about their actions and the need for reform within the group.

For years, there have been reports of molestation and other forms of abuse allegedly perpetrated by some members of the cult.

These acts not only violate basic human rights but also tarnish the cultural heritage they claim to represent.

One crucial aspect that warrants attention is the response from Malawi’s President, who happens to be Chewa himself.

By failing to condemn these barbaric activities, he inadvertently perpetuates a culture of impunity.

As a leader, he should take a stand against such violence and ensure that the Gule Wamkulu adheres to principles of respect and dignity for all individuals.

While it is important to preserve cultural traditions, it is equally vital to adapt them to modern values and norms.

The Gule Wamkulu can serve as an emblem of Chewa identity and pride, but it must evolve to reject any form of harassment or harm inflicted upon innocent people.

This incident demands immediate action to address the abuses within Gule Wamkulu.

It is an opportunity for Malawi’s government, civil society, and citizens to come together and initiate a meaningful dialogue on how best to safeguard both cultural heritage and human rights.

By doing so, the nation can move towards a future where traditions are celebrated responsibly and without compromising the dignity of any individual.
