Macra Calls for Compliance in SIM Card Registration

By Jones Gadama

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has emphasized the importance of compliance and re-registration of all mobile network subscribers to combat fraud and cybercrime.

According to Macra Deputy Director of Consumer Affairs, Kelious Mlenga, the re-registration process will make it harder for criminals to use stolen or fake IDs to register SIM cards.

Macra is implementing new SIM Card Registration Regulations to ensure the safety of ICT consumers in digital spaces. The regulations include mandatory biometric verification using fingerprints and national ID cards.

Additionally, there will be limits on the number of SIM cards per individual and institution, with individuals allowed to register up to 10 SIM cards and institutions up to 30.

The registration process, which will run from July to September 2025, aims to provide safeguards against the abuse of SIM cards by unscrupulous individuals. Mlenga stressed that all SIM cards, both new and existing, must be re-registered using fingerprints and national identification cards.

The authority has warned that violations of the regulations will result in fines for individuals and institutions.

Macra’s initiative is designed to enhance security and prevent the misuse of SIM cards for criminal activities.

Stakeholders, including Bishop Frederick Manjandima from Eagles Christian Resource International Church, have welcomed the engagement and pledged to disseminate information about the new regulations.

Manjandima emphasized the importance of compliance and encouraged people to register their SIM cards within the stipulated timeframe.

Macra’s efforts to regulate SIM card registration are expected to contribute significantly to the fight against fraud and cybercrime in Malawi.

By working together with stakeholders and the public, Macra aims to create a safer digital environment for all ICT consumers.

The upcoming registration process will provide an opportunity for Malawians to comply with the new regulations and contribute to a more secure digital landscape.

Macra urges all mobile network subscribers to take advantage of this initiative and register their SIM cards using the required biometric data.
