Malawi’s Mangochi Police arrest four foreigners over MK1.1m theft

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-Two Mozambicans and two Tanzanian nationals have been arrested in Mangochi on suspicion that they stole MK1.1 million from a salesperson at Shangirai Shop within the township.

The two Mozambican nationals have been identified as Daniel William Paulo, 53 and Leah Alanda Lungile (female), 20, while the Tanzanian nationals are identified as Gregory John, 51 and Joshua Singombo Kabile, 49.

Foreigners arrested for theft

Mangochi Police Station Publicist Amina Tepani Daudi said that the suspects were arrested on Saturday at Ulongwe Roadblock along Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway.

“It is reported that, the complainant on the said date met one of the suspect on the queue at National Bank where she wanted to deposit a sum of MK1.1 million.

“The suspect humbly requested the complainant to accompany him to Victoria Forex Bureau in order to assist him exchange US Dollars to Kwachas and also promised to share her undisclosed amount as a token.

“Sitafu followed the suspect outside before doing her transaction where she boarded a Toyota Axio bearing Mozambican registration AlL038MP and also found the other three suspects on board,” said Daudi.

However Upon arrival at Victoria Forex Bureau, Sitafu was given a fat sealed envelope alleged to have contained huge sum of US Dollars and was instructed to leave behind her handbag which contained MK1.1 million.

When she went inside to exchange the claimed dollars, she discovered that the envelope was full of ruled pieces of papers. She rushed back outside only to find that the suspects had cruised to unknown destination.

Immediately the matter was reported at Mangochi Police Station who invaded the ground and successfully arrested the suspects at Ulongwe Roadblock.

Upon searching in the motor vehicle, police recovered MK1 Million and also impounded the motor vehicle.

The suspects have been charged with theft which contravenes section 278 of the Penal Code and will appear before court to answer the charges.

Malawi’s Mangochi man commits suicide over MK0.5m village bank debt

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-A 40-year-old businessman at Makawa Trading Centre in Mangochi has committed suicide after failing to pay back a K500,000 loan he got from a Village Savings Bank.

Mangochi Police Station Publicist Amina Tepani Daudi has identified the deceased as Philip Theu.

She said the incident occurred on Monday at Kela Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.

According to Daudi, Theu who owned a Bottle store borrowed a sum of half a million kwacha from the Village Bank Group he joined within the village.

“He then failed to meet the deadline for repayment which was yesterday a thing which prompted the group members to follow him to his house to grab his property,” she explained.

At the house, the members found his daughter who lied that his father wasn’t home even though he was inside the house.

Few hours after they left, the daughter went to check in the bedroom where she found her father hanging from the roof.

The matter was reported at Makokola Police Unit. Officers rushed to the scene and took the dead body to Koche Health Centre where suffocation has been indicated as the cause of death.

Police are therefore appealing to the public to refrain from taking their own lives whenever they face challenges in life but to seek counselling or share issues with colleagues.

Philip Theu hailed from Kela Village Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
