MPICO, Lilongwe City Council, Masm pair in emergency drilling

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-MPICO, a subsidiary of Old Mutual Malawi on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 conducted a drilling fire emergency drilling exercise at Gateway Mall in the capital in preparation for accidents incidences.

Although the exercise created a fire scare at Gateway Mall which prompted panic among patrons, turned out to be a drill exercise.

Emergency responders, including firefighters from Lilongwe City Council (LCC) and Medical Aid Society of Malawi (MASM) corroborated well during the drilling.

MPICO’s Head of Property Services Eliot Jambo said the exercise aimed to prepare stakeholders for emergency situations like fires.

He commended the effective response to a simulated fire drill conducted at Gateway Mall in Lilongwe.

Jambo therefore expressed satisfaction with how the drill was handled.

LCC fire officer Lawrence Gangile demonstrated the council’s readiness to respond to such calls.

However Gangile disclosed that the council currently has only one operational fire engine with three others grounded due to minor issues.

But he assured city dwellers of adequate resources including vehicles and expertise to respond to emergencies.

The exercise, which involved responding to a mock fire, tested the readiness and coordination of emergency services.

During the drill, the Lilongwe City Council and MASM responded promptly, showing their preparedness for real-life emergencies.

And on his part, Lawrence Gangile, Fire Officer at Lilongwe City Council has disclosed that the council has adequate resources, including vehicles, to respond to emergencies across the city.

This upgrade, according to TNM will revolutionize the way MASM customers access and manage their health insurance contributions ensuring greater accessibility and efficiency.

“At TNM we understand that we are living in a fast-paced world where convenience and efficiency are paramount, especially for the healthcare sector. Gone are the days of lengthy processing times, as such the upgrade has eased efforts for both MASM and policyholders,” he said.

Commenting on the development, Dr Macfenton Shariff, Chief Commercial officer at MASM has expressed enthusiasm about the positive impact of the payment upgrade.

MASM members contribution fees up by 12%

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-One of the country’s largest health insurance services providers Medical Aid Society of Malawi (MASM) has announced the adjustment of its monthly membership contribution fee by 12 percent effective July 1, 2022.

In a statement, the society’s Chief Executive Officer Sydney Chikoti says the fee adjustment is due to the economic challenges that have choked the country resulting in high cost of living.

He says following the adjustment, the Executive members will now have to contribute MK20,000 a month from the previous MK18,000 while Executive Department members will be required to contribute MK19,000 from the previous MK17,000.

Chikoti adds that VIP members will have to pay MK40,000 from MK36,000 and VIO members have their contribution fee raised from MK50,000 to MK56,000.

While those on Econo-plan, Chikoti says the society has raised their contribution fee from the previous K5,000 to K6,000 whereas those on EXO scheme will have to pay MK40,000 from MK35,000.

Hoever, Chikoti has emphasized that the society’s board is mindful of pressure the changes will bring to membership and its resistant expectations whereby assuring that it will continue and reviewing its operations so as to ensure continued sustainability while ensuring its members of access to medical care they are accustomed to.

MASM is the first and largest Medical Aid (Health Insurance) services provider in Malawi.

It started its operations in the country in the 1960s and was operating as CIMAS, a health insurance organisation from Zimbabwe that came into the country to provide health insurance services to the expatriate population working in various establishments in the country.
