“We don’t want your apology but resignation. It’s too late”-APAM tells Minister Dausi

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Association of People with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) on Monday described Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi apology for his comments that that the attacks on persons with albinism were yet to get to levels where they should hold vigils at State House or seek asylum in other countries as useless.

APAM President Overton Kondowe said this soon after Dausi issued an apology through the media.

“It was us demanding him to apologize through the letter and not the media. If he wanted forgiveness from us I would have address us directly. Secondly where was he all this time?,” said Kondowe.

Adding “His apology remarks is null and void. We want him to resign and then apologize to us directly. If he think his apology will let us cancell our vigil he must forget.”

Maravi Post understand that Dausi’s comments led to Association of People with Albinism in Malawi to withdraw from the Presidential Task force on Persons with Albinism.

Dausi in his earlier remarks said: “When they say they want to seek asylum elsewhere, do they want to insult government? Seriously? If they [Apam] are listening to us, will they insult government?

These are things coming from homes where parents are selling their biological kids and they say we are facing challenges here?

“Even if there could be a country with tight security, but if a mother is selling her own child, a young man is selling his uncle right in the homes where there is supposed to be tight security. Now they say they want to march to State House, what will they be marching for?”

But on Monday at a news conference after public pressure, Dausi said he regrets that his remarks were misunderstood.

Dausi said he has contacted Apam to “explain, apologise and clarify” the matter.

The minister said he understands that his comments could be hurtful to the persons with albinism “even though they were not made with any malicious intent.”

Addressing the press in the capital Lilongwe Lilongwe on Monday, Dausi appeared to suggest that there was no need for Association of People with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) to stage a vigil on March 3, as planned, because attacks on persons with albinism have not reached crisis levels.

In a statement he has released, Dausi says he truly regrets that the true meaning of he had intended at that briefing did not come out as it was. The minister observed  that  he is personally concerned.

He therefore added that he fully appreciates the pain, anguish and fear the abductions and killings of people with albinism have caused on Malawians.

No more albino attacks; Chisi demands Malawi Home Security Minister Dausi’s resignation

By Victoria Milanzi

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Umodzi Party president Professor John Chisi has asked government Minister Nicholas Dausi to resign over insensitive remarks which he made.

The Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi told journalists that the continuous abduction and killings of persons with albinism are not rampant enough for people to worry about.

He said Malawians should exercise patience on the matter, saying that killings are not extreme enough for government to act on the matter.

Dausi said holding vigil at Kamuzu Palace in the capital, Lilongwe, will just be blowing up the issue.

Commenting on the matter Chisi said any person who makes such remarks is insensitive and should resign.

“God is showing us what kind of leaders we have by the speeches they make, their thinking capacity and their ability to deal with problems faced in the country,” said Chisi.

He added that leadership positions require vision and as government they are supposed to have the people’s confidence.

“I urge the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to be careful. They must not stick to people who are ruining them. They will loose the elections because they are insensitive. If we are to vote for such people then we have to question our selves,” he said.

UP president gave the example when George Chaponda lost people’s confidence so the president reshuffled him. He advised that is the way to go.

He said it is time Malawians decide where the country is going and on 21 May they must vote Umodzi Party into government for them to realise development.

Commenting on the issue that a suspect who was arrested on abductions of albino, Luke Buleya died in police custody, Chisi said the issue is sad.

” The police cell should be a safer place. The whole idea to arrest a person is to make sure that the person is safe. Something is wrong in the country there is still time we Malawians need to think where we want to go,” said Chisi.

He added that this is the same tree of Kamuzu Banda as he was ruthless and these tendencies are coming from that same syndrome of violence.

Malawi President Mutharika warns people against politicizing albino killings

By Tikondane Vega

Malawi President Peter Mutharika has warned people in the country to stop  politicizing the killings of people with albinism saying collective efforts are needed to curb the situation.

Mutharika said this in Bangwe on Sunday during a whistle stop tour he conducted in Blantyre.

The tour started from Nancholi to Zingwawa, Chilobwe, Manje, Limbe and  Bangwe.

The President said the issue of albino killings  in the country is not something that some quarters should use to advance their interest.

“The fight against albino killings requires joint efforts from churches, chiefs, enforcement agencies among others and it is not a one man show. As government we are equally concerned with the issue.

“The matter is very sensitive and at all cost people should avoid politicizing it. Let me assure all people in the country that my government will continue to offer protection to people with albinism,” said Mutharika.

Earlier, Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi echoed similar sentiments about albinism saying investigations are showing that relatives are connected to the killings of albinos in the country.

Dausi said the current government will leave no stone unturned but to arrest all suspects connected with albino killings adding justice will prevail sooner or later.

He said,” the way albino killings are happening in this country is questionable because it seems many relatives are having a hand in one way or the other. My appeal to many stakeholders including other politicians is that please let us avoid politicizing the story of albinism.

“Government is doing all it can to protect these people and let me say that like any case of albino killing, Nkhatabay and Karonga incidences are also being treated seriously and all perpetrators will be brought to book.
