Kabambe unveils MK60 billion tourism plan for Mulanje mountain

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-UTM party President Dalitso Kabambe has announced an ambitious K60 billion plan to transform Mulanje Mountain into a world-class tourism hub, creating thousands of jobs and boosting Malawi’s foreign exchange earnings.

Speaking in an interview with Maravi Post, the UTM leader hailed the recent recognition of Mulanje Mountain as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, describing it as one of the world’s great natural wonders.

He, however, expressed concern that communities surrounding the mountain have not been benefiting significantly from its global status.

“It is very sad that despite Mulanje Mountain holding such a prestigious record, the people around it are not truly benefiting. They only enjoy its fresh air while missing out on the real economic value,” said Kabambe.

As part of UTM’s manifesto, Kabambe pledged to invest K500 billion in the tourism sector, with Mulanje Mountain as a centerpiece of the strategy.

He explained that the party plans to install cable cars to ease access to the summit, construct hiking and biking trails, and introduce horseback riding as an attraction.

The former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM ) Governor also revealed plans to develop an eco-lodge and a top-class restaurant at the mountain’s summit, offering panoramic views of Mulanje and Phalombe.

In addition, the UTM leader promised to launch an annual Mulanje Festival that would feature music, hiking, tea tasting, and cultural exhibitions.

He further highlighted the creation of tourism corridors to showcase tea estates, waterfalls, and the rich history of Mulanje Mountain.

According to the economist, the K60 billion project will create at least 6,000 jobs and generate an estimated K25 billion annually from over 120,000 visitors.

“By making our mountain great, we are not only creating revenue and foreign exchange for government but also providing jobs for the youth, men, and women. At the same time, we are beautifying our nation. I have a great vision for the people of Mulanje and Phalombe, and I will continue to advance this vision at the national level,” he said.

Kabambe concluded the interview by urging Malawians to support his leadership bid.

Mulhako Wa Alhomwe backs UNESCO’s Mulanje mountain heritage site declaration

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Mulhako Wa Alhomwe cultural grouping has thrown its weight behind the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declaration of Mount Mulanje as a protected World Heritage Site.

Chairperson Muchanakhwaye Mpuluka emphasized that the declaration will bring numerous benefits to the local communities and the country at large.

“Mulanje Mountain holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Lhomwe people,” Mpuluka said, highlighting the importance of preserving the mountain’s heritage.

The UNESCO recognition is expected to attract international attention and support for conservation efforts, promoting sustainable development in the region.

The declaration, made on July 11, 2025, has not been without controversy, with some traditional leaders pushing for bauxite exploration and extraction on the mountain.

However, senior chiefs and environmentalists have strongly opposed these plans, dismissing any attempts to undermine the UNESCO declaration.

Mulhako Wa Alhomwe, an organization dedicated to promoting Lhomwe culture, has been instrumental in preserving the community’s heritage.

The group’s annual festival showcases the Lhomwe people’s rich cultural practices, including traditional dances, foods, and medicines.

By supporting the UNESCO declaration, Mulhako Wa Alhomwe is advocating for the protection of Mount Mulanje’s unique biodiversity and cultural significance, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
