Inclusive Prayer Facilities at South African Airports

Having access to comfortable, accessible prayer facilities can make your journey smoother and more meaningful. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) provides dedicated prayer spaces at major South African airports, ensuring travellers can observe their faith with ease while on the move.

Prayer facilities are located at the following South African Airports: Cape Town International Airport, King Shaka International Airport, O.R. Tambo International Airport, and Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport.

Here are some of the facilities available:

Cape Town International Airport

Type of facilities: Muslim Prayer Facility (Jamat Khana) and Multi-Faith Prayer Room

Location: Both facilities are located at Parkade 2, Ground Floor, next to the South African Police Service (SAPS) station.

The Jamat Khana, opened in 2010, is an ACSA-owned facility that operates 24 hours a day. The facility accommodates both male and female worshippers, with ablution facilities for both. Friday (Jumuah) prayers are held in congregation and led by ACSA’s Imam, typically from 12:45pm to 1:45pm. Due to high attendance on Fridays, travellers are urged to arrive early. During Ramadan, dates are made available so fasting worshippers can break their fast in the evening.

O.R. Tambo International Airport

Type of facilities: Muslim Prayer Room and a Christian (Chapel) Prayer Room

Location: Parkade 1, Level 1 (International Arrivals Parking)

King Shaka International Airport

Type of facilities: Muslim Prayer Facility and Non-Denominational Prayer Facility

Locations: Muslim Prayer Facility: International Arrivals Hall (opposite the ATMs) Non-Denominational Prayer Facility: Terminal Operations Centre (Level 3), in the terminal building where Passenger Service, AMC, and IT are located.

Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport

Type of Facility: Muslim Prayer Room and Interdenominational Prayer Room

Location: Both facilities are located on the 1st floor, close to Wimpy Restaurant.

Other ACSA Airports

Due to the size of their facilities, Upington, Kimberley, and Bram Fischer airports do not have dedicated prayer facilities. Passenger movement at these airports is typically very quick, with minimal waiting periods.

A prayer facility is being considered for inclusion at George Airport as part of the terminal expansion project. At King Phalo Airport, passengers who need a quiet space for prayer are currently accommodated in the VIP lounge. Prayer facilities at King Phalo airport are part of the departure terminal projects currently underway, with completion expected in April 2027.

The Traveller’s Guide to Bo-Kaap

The Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town’s most historically rich neighbourhoods, with so much to see, taste, and experience that we highly recommend adding a visit to your Cape Town itinerary.

Here’s our guide to what you simply cannot miss while visiting the Bo-Kaap.

A Brief History

Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city centre, and formerly known as the Malay Quarter, Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when numerous ‘huurhuisjes’ (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves. These individuals, known as Cape Malays, were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape.

Navigating the colourful streets of Bo Kaap

The Colourful Houses

The houses in Bo-Kaap are a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture, positioned in distinctive multi-coloured rows on steeply cobbled roads. The choice of colour is said to be attributed to the fact that, while on lease, all the houses had to be white. When this rule was eventually lifted, and the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, the owners painted all the houses bright colours as an expression of their freedom. Bo-Kaap is home to predominantly Muslim families who have been living there for generations. Today, the Bo-Kaap community is a significant part of the city’s cultural heritage.

What to See and Do

A five-minute walk from the city centre and De Waterkant and a 20-minute walk to the V&A Waterfront, the Bo-Kaap is best accessed by foot along Wale Street. Explore the Islamic “kramats” (shrines), mosques and food and craft markets, and discover the delicious Cape Malay cooking style. Please note that you do not need a permit to walk Bo-Kaap and surrounding streets in the City Centre.

Take an Audio Tour

Starting at the Bo-Kaap Museum, this 20-minute Audio Tour is guided by Shereen Habib, who has served as a guide for over 20 years- her family has lived here for almost a century. Take a leisurely walk as she guides you on a deeply personal loop through the historical heart of this area. With her help, you’ll soon see why this place is so close to the hearts of thousands of people across the world.

Thankfully, we narrowed it down. Our first choice is Marie Antoinette, Sofia Coppola‘s ravishing biographical drama starring Kirsten Dunst as the eponymous French royal.

Fourteen-year-old Austrian archduchess Marie Antoinette (Dunst) marries the Dauphin of France, the future King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), to ally with the two rival countries. Marie Antoinette thus follows Antoinette throughout her formative years, leading up to her ascension as the queen consort following the death of King Louis XV (Rip Torn) and the French Revolution. But at thePalace of Versailles, Antoinette is insistent on defying conventions and living a life of hedonistic pleasures, all while her marriage remains unconsummated, the people of France struggle and her public image deteriorates.

Marie Antoinette polarized critics upon release, some of whom felt that the depiction of Antoinette’s life as more like a pop video than a crucial piece of history diminished its significance. However, savvy viewers understood that it was meant to feel hyperactively unreal, that this lent itself to eventual cathartic reality and, of course, infamous tragedy. Sofia Coppola’s film is also, at its core, another of the director’s films about female isolation and loneliness. In the end, the film is more clever than you might think; at the very least, that soundtrack is outstanding.

‘The Shape of Water’ (2017)

In a covert government facility in 1960s Baltimore, mute, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) works as a cleaning lady, whose only friends are her coworker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) and her closeted neighbor, Giles (Richard Jenkins). But Elisa finds unexpected companionship in the form of a new arrival at her workplace — a strange, humanoid amphibious creature (Doug Jones) from South America who is mostly bound to a water tank. Through their wordless communications, Elisa and the creature form a strong bond, but her new friend is being sought out for recapture by a ruthless colonel (Michael Shannon).

Guillermo del Toro‘s Best Picture-winning fantasy drama is an unconventional love story for the ages. Combining distinctive visuals with an emotional narrative and a fantastic ensemble cast, The Shape of Water sees the director firing on all cylinders. Of course, the real stars of the show are Hawkins and Jones, who manage a genuinely moving and even erotic relationship despite the intermingling of species and lack of language. But as The Shape of Water affectingly proves, love is something beyond language.

‘Malcolm X’ (1992)

Spike Lee‘s epic biographical drama charts the life of the controversial black activist Malcolm X, played by Denzel Washington in a career-best performance. The film sees Malcolm from childhood through his rise to power as a leading figure in the struggle for black liberation, touching on a number of key periods in Malcolm’s life. After hitting bottom in prison during the 1950s, Malcolm reemerges as a Black Muslim and a significant figure in the Nation of Islam. Though his career was tragically cut short after his assassination at Washington Heights’ Audubon Ballroom in 1965, he left behind a groundbreaking legacy.

10 Greatest Movie Masterpieces of the Last 10 Years, Ranked

With a runtime clocking at more than 200 minutes, Malcolm X may seem like a daunting experience to sit through. In reality, it is directed with such verve and tenacity that the runtime is finished before you know it. Lee gives the film an epic feel truly worth of its subject, and Washington portrays the man himself with both power and vulnerability — which ultimately landed him a nomination for Best Actor at the 65th Academy Awards. Ultimately, Malcolm X is a drama that is both artistically rewarding and loyal to its subject.

VA NJ Governor Races, Mamdani Elected NYC Mayor, California Redistricting

Democrats won two governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey, victories they call a rejection of President Trump’s policies and a sign that economic issues are resonating with voters. New York City elected Zohran Mamdani as its first Muslim mayor, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo in a race that drew record voter turnout. And California voters approved a new congressional map that could give Democrats up to five more House seats in next year’s midterms.

Burkina Faso forces killed 100 civilians in March – HRW

At least 100 civilians were killed by Burkina Faso government forces in March near the western town of Solenzo, Human Rights Watch said Monday.

According to victim testimony and videos shared on social media gathered by the rights group, the attackers were Burkina Faso special forces and members of a pro-government militia, the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland.

The victims were all ethnic Fulani, a pastoralist community that is widespread across the region, which the government has long accused of supporting Muslim militants.

An earlier report from Human Rights Watch stated that the government’s involvement was likely, because of video evidence on social media, although the findings were not definitive.

The government issued a sharp denial when first reports surfaced, saying in a statement it “condemned the propagation, on social media, of images inducing hate and community violence, and fake information aimed at undermining social cohesion” in the country.

“The viral videos of the atrocities by pro-government militias near Solenzo sent shock waves through Africa’s Sahel region, but they told only part of the story,” said Ilaria Allegrozzi, senior Sahel researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Further research uncovered that Burkina Faso’s military was responsible for these mass killings of Fulani civilians, which were followed by deadly reprisals by an Islamist armed group. The government needs to impartially investigate these deaths and prosecute all those responsible.”

Burkina Faso authorities did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the group’s new report.

The landlocked nation of 23 million people has symbolized the security crisis in the arid Sahel region south of the Sahara in recent years. It has been shaken by violence from extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, and the governments fighting them.

The military junta, which took power in 2022, failed to provide the stability it promised. According to conservative estimates, more than 60% of the country is now outside of government control, more than 2.1 million people have lost their homes and almost 6.5 million need humanitarian aid to survive.

The attack in the western Boucle du Mouhoun region, including Solenzo and other towns, began on Feb. 27 and lasted until April 2, involving hundreds of government troops and drones, according to eyewitnesses quoted in the report.

“The VDPs shot at us like animals, while drones were flying over our heads. Many women and children died because they could not run,” said a Fulani herder, 44, from Solenzo, referring to the pro-government militias.

After the attack, hundreds of Fulani residents fled across the border into neighbouring Mali, the report said.

“Today, in the whole province, there are no more Fulani — they all fled or were killed or taken hostage,” said a 53-year-old man from Solenzo. “But the other (ethnic) communities remain.”

After the government forces left, the report said that jihadist fighters from a group known as JNIM reentered the towns and carried out reprisal killings against residents, targeting the men whom it considered to be military collaborators.

“All the men had been executed in front of the health center,” said a 60-year-old woman who witnessed JNIM abuses in Tiao village, a town to the northeast of Solenzo on April 5. “I counted up to 70 bodies.”

According to analysts, the junta’s strategy of military escalation, including mass recruitment of civilians for poorly trained militia units, has exacerbated tensions between ethnic groups.

It it impossible to get an accurate picture of the situation in the country since the military leadership has installed a system of de facto censorship, rights groups said, and those daring to speak up can be openly abducted, imprisoned or forcefully drafted into the army.
