Oxfam Malawi’s EVAWG ambassador Skeffa Chimoto condemns Pro-rape singer Chavura

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Oxfam Malawi’ Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) ambassador Skeffa Chimoto on Friday joined the public by condemning the pro-rape singer Mwiza Chavula.

Chimoto who is the famous local musician along side other artists including Faith Mussa described Chavura’s song and lyrics as insane.

The artist told the news conference in the capital Lilongwe that musicians and the media have a great influence in people’s lives therefore their work must be that of educative than inciting violence.

Chimoto there urged fellow artists to embrace women existence in the society as they are the custodian of everyone life who give birth.

“As artists we believe in freedom of expression. However, freedom of expression should come with responsibility. We have a role to play in informing, educating and entertaining our audiences responsibly and we feel Chavura hasn’t done so.

“We are therefore dismayed by Mwiza’s song and lyrics not only because he is a hip hop artist whose audience are mainly the youth but because no sane person would find glory in rape and abuse towards women. We are therefore join all other stakeholders in condemning this unacceptable song,” condemns Chimoto.

Oxfam Malawi is into a four-year EVAWG campaign from 2016-2019 aimed at transforming social norms, attitudes and behaviours related to violence against women and girls.

On Thursday, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) disclosed that were hunting for the pro-rape singer Chavula for questioning.

This follows the public condemnation of his song titled, Ndidzakupanga rape” which is inciting sexual harassment towards women and young girls.

On Wednesday as well, Malawi retired Child Justice Magistrate Esmie Tembenu asked the police to arrest Chavura over his controversial ‘rape’ song arguing incitement of any form has legal consequences.

Tembenu said this in a press statement released as the Executive Director for Family Rights, Elderly and Child Protection (FRECHIP) Trust.

According to him, though Chavura has apologised through his Facebook page, the act was a pure face saver as the artist has used the same platform to call Malawians “stupid” for reacting angrily to his song.

“The fact remains that damage has been inflicted. We call upon the Police to act on this issue and assure Malawians that such incitement has legal consequences.

“As a deterrent, the Police must send a strong message to such artists and Malawians, that no one is above the law and that artists particularly, have a duty to conduct themselves in manner that does not inflict pain and suffering on Malawian girls and women, whose rights are also guaranteed to be protected under Sections 15, 20, 23 and 24 of the Constitution,” reads part of the statement.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service (MPS) say are hunting for the pro-rape singer Mwiza Chavula for questioning.

This follows the public condemnation of his song titled, “Ndidzakupanga rape” which is inciting sexual harassment towards women and young girls.

In a brief statement by National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera disclosed that the law enforcers are looking for the artist for questioning.

“Mwiza Chavura the singer of Ndidzakupanga rape is wanted by the police for question. He may as well surrender himself to any police formation,” urges Kadadzera

On Wednesday Malawi retired Child Justice Magistrate Esmie Chombo asked the police to arrest Chavura over his controversial ‘rape’ song arguing incitement of any form has legal consequences.

Tembenu said this in a press statement released on Wednesday as the Executive Director for Family Rights, Elderly and Child Protection (FRECHIP) Trust.

According to him, though Chavura has apologised through his Facebook page, the act was a pure face saver as the artist has used the same platform to call Malawians “stupid” for reacting angrily to his song.

Meanwhile, Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC) has also joined the wagon of condeming the song saying Chavura insulted the modesty of women, which the organisation said was contrary to Section 137 (3) of the Penal Code.

“WOLREC’s concern is also targeted at the youth since they are the ones that listen more to hip-hop genre than any group of people. The youth would or may have been misled into thinking that if woman refuses to have sex, the man is justfied to rape her,” said Dumase Zgambo-Mapemba, WOLREC Communications Officer.

Malawi’s Mwiza Chavura’ pro-rape song angers public

Malawians have reacted angrily to the production of a hip hop track titled ‘rape’ by Mwiza Chavura.

In the song, Chavura was announcing plot to let a girl got drunk on his bills with an intention of raping her for turning down his sexual advances on her.

“Ndidzakupanga rape/ kukumwetsa bawa ndikupanga rape/kukamwa kwako nzakumata tape/ zindikana uone udzalira help/ I don’t ……. around nzakupanga rape,” goes part of the chorus of the song.

But the song has apparently not gone down well with a lot of Malawians, including some artists who have since taken to the social media condemning it.

Spoken word poet Qabaniso Malewezi, himself a former rapper, said much as there was freedom of speech which artists enjoy, there was a line that needed to be drawn.

“Art that openly talks about raping a girl should not be tolerated. Any glorification of rape culture should not be condoned. Being an artist is a privilege and honour not to be abused. I am publicly condemning the song titled “Rape” by Chavura. I say no to verbal sexual violence,” said Malewezi.

Taking his turn, gospel music star Khama Khwiliro felt promoting rape in a song was a worst thing any artist would do.

Said Khwiliro: “Mr. Mwiza Chavura…. you went too far as an artist. Never do this again. Promoting rape in your song is the worst thing an artist would do. A worst strategy of getting yourself famous.”

However, journalist Rogers Siula said there are a lot of music that objectify females and needed to be banned and withdrawn from the public domain.

“Let’s simply say no to all songs and withdraw or ban all music that objectifies females. It’s a sad reality that doesn’t need double standards to be dealt with… We need an affirmative stand; we can’t be on the fence. There’s a growing nuisance (as regards content) in music!! And well, we should extend that fierce stand to music videos too,” said Siula.

Meanwhile, a network of Christian artists in the country, has also expressed sadness at the level of vulgarity being portrayed in the song.

In a statement, the network further said it was appalling that a Malawian artist would come up with such a pro-rape song in an age where the whole world was standing against the vice.

“Let us not trivialize what is actually a big concern and a painful issue that the girls and women in our homes are facing up against in different forms. This song not only perpetrates crime but it’s also evil indeed as it will promote rape issues among young people,”

The network further condemns owners of online music distribution sites malawi-music.com and entertainmentmalawi for making the song available for downloads.

“We propose that this song be banned and its creators taken to task including the producers; the label ‘Nyambaro music’ under which this song was produced; and those that are further distributing it on their websites. The song is not only evil, it is criminal. This madness must stop! We say no to ‘rape’,” said the statement.

As we were going to the press on Wednesday morning, unconfirmed reports were indicating that Chavura has apologized to Malawians and has since promised to withdraw the song.
