A significant milestone in improving maternal health services has been achieved in Nkhata Bay with the handover of a state-of-the-art maternity wing at Kande Health Centre. The K131 million facility, constructed and furnished by the Hagen Bjørke Malawi Foundation, is set to revolutionize the delivery of maternal healthcare services in the area.
The construction of the maternity wing follows a request from former Member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay South, Emily Chinthu Phiri, to the organization’s director, Øla Groønn. Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chipiliro Chaluwa, the hospital’s nursing in-charge, expressed gratitude for the new facility, highlighting the challenges that healthcare workers and expectant mothers had been facing.

“We had been experiencing Born Before Arrival cases as most expectant women preferred coming to the hospital when labour was due in fear of having to wait at the health facility with inadequate waiting rooms,” Chaluwa said. “This new maternity wing will help ease these challenges and provide a conducive environment for our patients.”
The new facility is equipped with modern equipment and amenities, designed to provide a comfortable and safe environment for expectant mothers. With 16 pregnant women delivering at the health centre every week, the impact of this new facility will be significant.
The Hagen Bjørke Malawi Foundation’s investment in the Kande Health Centre demonstrates its commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Malawi. The organization’s efforts have brought much-needed relief to the healthcare workers and expectant mothers in Nkhata Bay.
The community has welcomed the new maternity wing, with many expressing gratitude for the organization’s generosity. The facility is expected to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates, improve health outcomes, and enhance the overall quality of life for mothers and their newborns.
As the healthcare sector continues to face challenges, initiatives like the Hagen Bjørke Malawi Foundation’s are crucial in bridging the gap in healthcare services. The new maternity wing at Kande Health Centre is a testament to the power of collaboration and partnership in improving healthcare outcomes.
