Two Jailed for attempted robbery in Chikwawa

The First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Chikwawa has found two men guilty of attempted robbery, and sentenced them each to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.

According to Chikwawa Police Spokesperson, Foster Benjamin the two Moffat Kudyabwino and Seke Zeka, were convicted on Tuesday after attempting to rob businessman Kaunda Maguza at a gunpoint.

He said the court through State Prosecutor Inspector Helix Kamkweche, heard that the convicts were with five other accomplices during a foiled robbery at Kamchewere in Ngabu area.

According to Benjamin the 5 suspects are still on remand awaiting trial in a case they are denying any involvement.

The 5 where arrested after Zeka led the detectives to their respective homes.

This was contrary to Kudyabwino and Zeka as they admitted to the charges of attempted robbery, contrary to Section 302 of the Penal code.

Kamkweche told the court that “the thugs, who were armed with an AK47 rifle, a muzzle loader and panga knives, assaulted Maguza and his wife before they fled off after Maguza cunningly brandished a piece of timber that the robbers had mistaken for a gun,”.

Passing his sentence, First Grade Magistrate Gladstone Churundu shared the States observation and sentenced the two each to 10 years in prison.

Benjamin further said that the police have recovered an AK47 rifle, two live ammunitions on the spot and a muzzle loader.

Kudyabwino, 34, comes from Mandizwa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mbenje while 25 year old Zeka hails from Chilanga Village in Traditional Authority Ndamera’s area both in Nsanje District.

Malawi police hunts for thug attempting to kidnap albino boy

A man hunt is underway at Ngabu in Chikwawa District for a thug who attempted to kidnap a five-year-old boy with albinism.

According to police report in the district, the boy escaped kidnap in the wee hours of Saturday after his mother single-handedly fought the criminal.

Chikwawa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Constable Foster Benjamin told this reporter on Sunday the incident occurred at Zuze Village in Senior Chief Ngabu in the district.

“The thug, who was masked, is believed to have entered the house through the front window.

According to the boy’s mother, Margret Richard, 30, her son woke up screaming after being grabbed by the unknown man.

Awakened by the scream, the mother flickered on a torchlight that revealed a man in a mask, pulling at her son from the mat,” Benjamin said.

According to the police publicist, the mother launched an onslaught, battling with the suspected kidnapper.

“At the time, the father of the house who was asleep in a separate room, got into action and found the criminal already out through the same window he used to enter the house.

“The matter was then reported to Ngabu Police Post and the visit to the house found that the window was not reinforced as it was sealed using a sack,” he added.

Meanwhile, police in the district have intensified the search for the thug.

Benjamin, therefore, urged members of the public to make sure that their houses are reinforced and properly secured.

Passing fake Cheque – Police Recover 37 Million Kwacha Property.

The Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Unit in Blantyre has arrested three men for allegedly passing valueless cheque contrary to section 319(D) and obtaining goods by false pretences contrary to section 319 of the Penal Code. Property worth over thirty seven million kwacha recovered.

The unit received a report on 28th March 2018 from Mr. Funani Yesani 50 of Nkando village traditional authority Juma in Mulanje a Parts Manager at John Deere LONAGRO Malawi Limited that a John Deere Farm Tractor green in colour chassis number 1PY5075ECHO44380, engine number PY3029T259713 valued MK20,720,000.00 had been stolen by unknown criminals who had passed a valueless cheque to the company as potential buyers.

However, the cheque could not be accepted by the banks and the three could not be traced.

The Anti – Motor Theft Unit embarked on an intensive investigation into the matter.

On 14th August, 2018 the three were cornered namely Francis Lumbe 33 of Mapunje village traditional authority Kunthembwe in Blantyre, Reuben Chimpanzi 24 of Mtokoma traditional authority Kwataine in Ntcheu and Wasi Khimba 24 of Kachenga village traditional authority Kalembo in Balaka.

The three led a team of investigators to Kasungu where the Farm Tractor and other equipments were recovered.

Other recovered equipment include a CAT diesel generator serial number GBYO1771 valued MK12, 123, 041.00 (twelve million, one hundred twenty three thousand and fourty one kwacha) which was stolen from Barloworld Equipment through same means in December 2017 and a Baldan ARHO4 Plough chassis number 00615187004001valued MK5, 378, 572.00 (five million, three seventy eight thousand, five hundred seventy two kwacha) stolen from Farming and Engineering Services (FES) on 17/01/2018.

All the equipment were recovered from Geoffrey Daison 43 of Kulima village traditional authority Ngabu in Chikwawa a transporter who runs Malinga Transport.

Companies and individuals who might have lost their valuable property through such means are being advised to report such cases to Police through the Anti – Motor Vehicle Theft Unit for assistance.

Three arrested for attempted suicide in Malawi

Police at Ngabu in Chikwawa are keeping in custody three people on suspicion that they attempted to terminate their lives.

Chikwawa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Constable Foster Benjamin told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the three, Emmanuel Beni, 29, Hanna Mahomed, 20 and Mary Khambadza, 18 were arrested separately on Thursday and Friday in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in the district.

Benjamin said the suspects are said to have taken rat poison (termic) following disputes in their respective families.

“The first suspect, Beni, is alleged to have picked a quarrel with his wife after he accused her squandering money meant for family necessities,” the police publicist said.

“The other two Mahomed and Khambadza decided to kill themselves in protest to their husbands’ alleged infidelity,” Benjamin added.

Malawi News Agency has independently established that all the suspects were admitted to Ngabu Rural Hospital where medical findings indicated that they had consumed poison.

According to Benjamin, police officers acted on a tip and apprehended the three on their hospital beds.

“If convicted, the three will face a maximum sentence of seven years in prison,” Benjamin told Mana, adding that the offence contravenes Section 229 of the Penal Code.

Beni hails from Mphamba, while Mahomed and Khambadza come from Thonje and Nkhakamira villages respectively in Senior Chief Ngabu.

The arrest of the three came barely two days after a 20 year – old man, Rabson Joe, poisoned himself to death at Nkumaniza in the same area.

It is alleged that Joe had been at loggerheads with his wife whom he suspected of having an extra marital relationship. Out of anger, it is believed, Joe took termic and was pronounced dead on arrival at Ngabu Rural Hospital.

Meanwhile, police in the district are calling people to seek help and advice from police’s victim support units, marriage counselors and traditional leaders if they have troubling issues than committing suicide.
