Nkhata Bay Council eyes higher revenue after MK148m lodge renovation

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Nkhata Bay District Council is set to boost its revenue collection following the completion of the rehabilitation of its lodge located in the area of Senior Chief Mkumbira.

The lodge had been temporarily closed to allow for the much-needed rehabilitation works.

Now that the facility has been revamped, the council anticipates an increase in the number of customers and, consequently, higher returns.

James Tembo, Director of Administration and Human Resources at the Nkhata Bay District Council, expressed confidence that the upgraded lodge will significantly enhance the council’s income generation capacity.

He highlighted the potential of the newly rehabilitated facility to attract more business and support local tourism.

Senior Chief Mkumbira praised the government for its commitment, noting that the renovation of the lodge has not only revived its function but also enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the district.

He emphasized that the lodge, originally constructed in 1953, now stands as a symbol of progress and development in the area.

The rehabilitation was carried out under the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) programme.

The project was implemented by the National Local Government Finance Committee.

It received financial support from the World Bank, amounting to K148 million.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen local governance and improve service delivery through sustainable infrastructure development.

With the lodge now fully operational, both council officials and community leaders are hopeful that it will contribute positively to the district’s economic landscape.

Nkhatabay wins Best MALGA’s Council Perfoming Education Awards in five years

SALIMA-(MaraviPost)-Nkhatabay has successfully emerged as the best performing district council in education for the last five years.

Nkhatabay was also declared as education overall winer in Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA)’s Third Annual Award Gala Dinner on Friday night, October 18, 2024 in Salima.

This is evidenced in the 2024 Malawi School Certificate Education (MSCE) examinations results which Nkhatabay district emerged also as number one.

Nkhatabay District Council Principal Administrator Moses Jere told The Maravi Post in an interview that dedication, passion and hard working spirit in teachers are secret behind the success in education performance.

“Nkhatabay district council has won the best performing district in education this year again for the last five years. The secret is none other than the dedication of the teachers and hardworking spirit in our kids and learners.

“The awards are very a big motivation to us as a council.It’s just something that is going to make us work extra harder so that we maintain the standards and everything that we put in place to ensure that we are always number one when it comes to performance of the learners and also the hardworking spirit that we inculcated in the teachers”, lauds Jere.

He therefore appeals to other councils, “Let other district councils that work professionally. They must know why they are called teachers, and at the same time, learners must always be encouraged that they have the capacity to do better and they can make it.

“Councils must also learn from us that issues of education requires a concerted efforts. It’s not only about teachers. It’s about parents. It’s about learners themselves. It’s about the community. So everyone must play part in promoting education”.

MALGA Executive Director Hadrod Mkandawire expressed satisfaction with the positive impact the awards have had on the performance of local councils.

Mkandawire observed the awards have improved public officers’ output efficient in local councils.

“This years we have many awards as all district councils showed dedication in their workplaces for better service delivery.

“The awards have motivated many officers in councils to improve work while serving the general public effectively”, lauds Mkandawire.

In his address, Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda emphasized the need to promote public officers based on performance, merits to improve quality service delivery.
