“Mutharika didn’t delegate Chihana but Jappie Mhango to Prof Nyasulu’s funeral services as austerity measure”-Press Secretary Maulidi

…..For Jappie Mhango was cost-cutting measures to the event…

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika did not delegate Second Vice President Enoch Chihana to represent him at a funeral of late Professor Timothy Nyasulu as part of government’s austerity measures.

Instead Mutharika delegated the Minister of Transport, Jappie Mhango, though Chihana was also present at the funeral.

Presidential Press Secretary, Cathy Maulidi has told MIJ Online that “the decision was a direct application of austerity measures.”

“While a Vice President requires a full entourage for escort, a Minister travels with only a driver and a single security officer.

“By delegating the Minister, the President acted strategically to conserve public resources and ensure fiscal discipline,” she added.

This comes after Chief Mtwalo rebuke government machinery for delegating a minster to represent Mutharika at the event while Second Vice President was available.

With this State House clarification puts Chihana office in an awkward position on his appetite for travels.

Chihana must live within the means on government events not just jump from one function to another, its costly.

“Mutharika stands remains not to shield anyone in Amaryllis Hotel Purchase probe”-Maulidi

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika says remains committed not to shield anyone involved in the ongoing Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) probe on Amaryllis Hotel purchase probe.

Presidential Press Secretary, Cathy Maulidi said the Malawi leader continues closely monitoring developments surrounding the issue and remains committed to ensuring that all those implicated are brought to justice as part of the government’s broader fight against corruption.

Maulidi was responding to a recent press conference held by the disgruntled Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), where the civil society grouping raised concerns over the handling of the controversial transaction and called for transparency and accountability.

The press Secretary hinted that Mutharika believes the matter must be thoroughly investigated and that no one involved should be allowed to go scot-free if found culpable.

“The President is closely following developments regarding the Amaryllis Hotel sale. He remains firm in his commitment that anyone implicated in the issue must be held accountable,”said Maulidi .

She further noted that Mutharika has full confidence in the work of Parliament’s oversight institutions, particularly the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is currently examining the circumstances surrounding the sale.

“The President is awaiting the committee’s findings and believes the process being undertaken by the parliamentary body will help establish the facts and guide the next course of action”, assures Maulidi.

The development comes just hours after former Presidential Secretary Colleen Zamba failed to appear before the PAC of Parliament, where she had been summoned to answer questions related to the sale of the hotel.

Her absence has raised further questions about the transaction and intensified calls from civil society organisations and some lawmakers for greater transparency in the handling of the matter.

The PAC has been conducting inquiries into the sale of the hotel amid allegations that the process may have been irregular and potentially detrimental to the public interest.

The committee is yet to meet Zamba, Attorney General (AG) Frank Mbeta.

The outcome of the PAC investigation is expected to play a critical role in determining whether further legal or administrative action will be taken against individuals linked to the deal.

Mutharika withholds CDF bill assenting for stiff measures control’ development over funds abuses

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika has withheld assenting to the passed Constitution (Amendment) Bill of 2025.

The Bill seeks to entrench the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in the Constitution by defining its objectives, governance structure and guiding principles for its management and use.

Presidential Press Secretary Cathy Maulidi has justified Mutharika decision saying aims at safeguarding financial integrity while ensuring that constituency-level development projects continue uninterrupted.

Maulidi adds, “The President has directed the Ministers of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and Finance and Economic Planning to develop clear guidelines on the management of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF)”.

She therefore disclosed that Mutharika has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring that the management of public funds, particularly the CDF, upholds the highest standards of accountability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.

On Monday, Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) urged Mutharika to assent the bill while working on modalities to safeguard funds abuses.

While on the other side, NAP disagreed arguing that the bill needed to be reviewed before assented to.

From Newsroom to Malawi State House’ Corridors: Cathy Maulidi’s rise signals growing space for women in power

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-When President Peter Mutharika appointed journalist Cathy Maulidi as Presidential Press Secretary, many saw it as more than just a routine staffing change at State House.

It marked a symbolic step in Malawi’s ongoing journey toward greater representation of women in leadership.

Maulidi, who began her journalism career at the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) and was mentored by veteran broadcaster Lifu Litete, has moved from telling the nation’s stories to shaping the president’s message.

Her appointment has ignited discussion about what it means for women and youth inclusion under Mutharika’s administration.

In an interview with Maravi Post on Monday Habiba Osman, a human rights commissioner and gender advocate said is inspiring to see women who have long advocated for equality now occupying spaces of influence.

Osman congratulated the president for appointing a new crop of young women to ministerial and senior government positions but urged him to go further by opening doors for more new faces.

She add that As a journalist known for her sharp analysis and commitment to political programs, her appointment sends a strong message about the value of experience, professionalism, and persistence.

“But appointments alone are not enough what matters is whether such women are empowered to make meaningful decisions and shape policy.”

Since assuming office, President Mutharika has repeatedly emphasized his administration’s commitment to gender equality.

Women now head several foreign missions and hold senior roles in the judiciary a development many activists view as a positive shift toward a more inclusive government.

“It is key to put women and youth in positions of influence if we are to achieve the Malawi 2063 agenda,” she said.

Cathy Maulidi’s journey from the Times newsroom to State House mirrors the possibilities for young women who aspire to leadership.

For many women in Malawi’s media and advocacy circles, Maulidi’s new role stands as both an inspiration and a reminder: the path to equality lies not only in policy but in the visibility and influence of women at the very top.
