Region 5 Youth Games to unveil Lilongwe partners

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As days are slowly being numbered before the country hosts Region 5 Youth Games in December this year, the company has communicated that on 24th August 2022 will unveil partners.

Public, Relations Officer for Region 5 Youth Games Local Organizing Committee, Tamara Chafunya said from August 24, 2022 will be the 100 days count down before official presentation of games in December.

She indicated that apart from unveiling the partners, the committee will also hold several activities in Schools such as quiz and giving full information about the games within the city of Lilongwe.

According to her the youths feel the ownership and understand the games and not only that but also let business gurus, the residents to appreciate and embrace the games.

“When we say unveil the partners, it doesn’t mean we have limited that room for those that feel can partake in these activities in terms of parternering with us,we want Malawi to produce good event”,

“This is not only for Ministery of Youths and Sports but for all Malawians hence we urge other stakeholders to come in with their support.

“We will also parade in different road networks leading us to these various Schools to hype these games. Other countries have done it before and we are optimistic that Malawi will also do the same”, says Chafunya.

Chafunya also added that as local organizing committee are working tirelessly to make sure all Sports infrastructures and villages are complete before December.

As one way of gearing up with the preparations, Teakwando Coaches and referees are undergoing training at Bingu National Stadium which started on Wednesday to make them understand the sport in terms of rules and regulations.

This is second of it’s kind after the Committee also drilled journalists a month a go.

Malawi will be hosting Region 5 Youth games trial in September.

In December almost 2000 delegates of athletes and Coaches are anticipated in the country from all the 10 Region 5 member states including Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, e-Swatini, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mauritius and Namibia.

Netball, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Teakwando, Swimming, Boxing are amongst the sports codes to be presented.

African Union Region 5 Youth games will take place in the country from December 2 to 11, 2022.

Malawi to cough out MK20bn towards Region 5 Youth Games

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As the country is set to host Region 5 games in December this year, Malawi government is expected to spend MK20 billion towards the event.

Minister of Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda disclosed the expenditure on Thursday, July 14, 2022 during corporate Breakfast for the 10th edition of the Region 5 youth Games in Lilongwe.

Chimwendo said the games will help to boost the country’s foreign exchange rate as “The country is expected to earn US$2million during the event”.

He said the country will also provide extra MK11 billion for the hosting of the games.

Chimwendo said the breakfast was organised to bring in companies together to help the country in promoting the region 5 games.

The minister added that 800 volunteers has been recruited towards the hosting of the games which will help in job creation.

Region 5 Youth Games committee dates Malawi sports journalists

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-With five months to go before the country hosts Region 5 Youth Games, Lilongwe 2022 Limited local organizing committee on Tuesday dated sports journalists in the central region with an orientation.

The aim of the orientation was to allow the media their role in games promotion, to find the way forward and work plan on the challenges journalists face in accessing information.

Chairman for Region 5 Youth games Lilongwe 2022 Limited Local Organizing Committee, Dennis Mombera said the media is very important and key to the games ahead, as they are responsible for disseminating accurate information.

He added they want the general public to get right information about the games hence the media orientation.

“We want to partner with the media to create one team that is going to drive the narrative. We want the media to capture the impact these games have to Malawi as the host and SADC region at large”, Mombera said.

Speaking after the orientation, Patrick Simango, one of the veteran sports journalists from Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) described the orientation as very vital saying the region 5 youth games slated for December is a very big event hence a need for people to be fed with proper information about the games.

“It’s a major tournament, where different sports codes apart from Netball and Football which are well known by many,hence the meeting will enable us the journalists to come up with programs that will help people out there to know some sports codes,like Lawn Tennis,Swimming,Gymnastics.

Let me thank the committee for organising such a meeting today and my appeal is that they should be doing this so often so that we journalists sail in the same boat with the organisers. Other event organizers should emulate what Region 5 Youth Committee has done and this will definitely empower us”, says Simango.

The orientation that took place at Bingu National Stadium attracted media over 20 media houses from print, electronic and online.

African Union Region 5 Youth games are expected to take place in the country from 2nd to 11th December, 2022 and 10 member countries, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, e-Swatini, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia are anticipated to participate.
