LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Hours after they were humbled by South Africa with 32-55 scores, Malawi Under 17 netball team defeated Namibia 42-39 to recover from the humiliation.
The game was highly contested as Namibia did not give room for the junior queens to display their usual game hence ended up struggling in defense and in attack.
In the first quarter Namibia led Malawi 9-8, and the second quarter the desert jewels maintained their lead, 22-23.
Beatrice Mpinganjira’s girls took the lead in the third quarter, but not a convincing one 32-29.
At regulation time the score sheet was Malawi the host 42-39 Namibia to the relief of coach Mpinganjira.
After the match assistant coach Mpinganjira acknowledged Namibia gave them a tough time saying the girls struggled in defending “At the same time the team was abit dead in the wings which gave room for the desert jewels to make free movements”.
“I expect another tough match against Zimbabwe,we are going to prepare our girls especially in the defense so that we should avoid conceding more goals”, Mpinganjira said.
The win for Malawi has revived chances of winning the championship.
The region 5 Youth games tourney which is currently underway in the Capital Lilongwe will come to an end on December 11, 2022.
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Webster Mzunda’s late strike at 83rd minute,fired Malawi Under 17 National Football team into the semifinals of the AUSC region 5 Youth games COSAFA.
The junior Flames despite playing entertaining football in the first half,they lacked composure and marksmanship on goals hence the visitors Junior Brave Warriors opened the score sheet at 27th minute through Dorian Nanuseb after defensive error in Malawi defence.
Malawi continued attacking dangerously until at 37th minute when Captain Blessings Kanowa was fouled in the penalty box and the referee from Mozambique Wilson Muiange pointed on the spot.
Blessings Kanowa however didn’t make any mistake than sending the ball into the net to put the game at level.The team continued displaying beautiful football as they searched for the winning goal which would send them into the semifinals from group A.
As it was the case in Botswana game,Malawi failed to utilize the set pieces they got in the game, playing 12 corner kicks and numerous free kicks but nothing came out from that.
As the game was thought it would end one apiece Derklek Msakakuona, head coach made several changes to make sure his job is saved.
He brought in Webster Mzunda at 75th minute, this sub paid dividend to Msakakuona as the boy did not need more than 8 minute in the field of play to score vital goal which sent the home fans into raptures.
The victory took Malawi to 4 points in group A from 2 games and ensured them to finish in top 2 with either Botswana or Namibia who are to slug it out for the other semifinal slot on Tuesday.
The Junior Flames were wasteful, missing a lot of chances.
In a post match interviews, Derklek Msakakuona, Malawi U17 coach said there was an improvement in Sunday’s play against Namibia comparing to that against Botswana on Friday.
“We played well today,there is great improvement, a great one for that matter though we are always coming from behind.We have some days before semifinals we prepare our boys mentally for the game.
“Let me thank the supporters that came in large numbers they helped to motivate the players”, Msakakuona joyfully said.

Group B second round of games will be played on Monday,Mozambique will battle it out with the Amajita of South Africa from 1500hours,it is a must win for the Young Mambas as they lost their opener 1-0 to Zambia.
The Amajita, however, are abit safe after thumping Seychelles 11-0 in their opener,they can seal a semifinal slot with just one win.
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) region 5 Youth Games Lilongwe 2022 continue, the Region 5 chairman who is also the Region’s Organizing Committee Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Mutoya has showed satisfaction on how the games are being patronized.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at Bingu National Stadium, Mutoya said as a region they are inspired with how the games being played are patronized in all venues and Sports codes.
“From the day we started the tournament with Teakwondo, Football,Basketball we have seen a number of features that have inspired us.
“Firstly the support from the general public, which is amazing as it is more valued by the region,” he said.
Mutoya excited, “It is not a secret that some of the facilities were not ready in time to host the games. There were a lot of doubts from everyone if Malawi could make it. But our overall impression is that we have seen contractors, government, LOC and everybody working tirelessly to make sure that the competition is not compromised.
“Every 6 o’clock in the morning we are meeting the CDM’s and they are happy with the accommodation, food they are eating and facilities they are using for training and games. Special mention to the technical team which has made sure the games are always in time”.
He added the critical moment was when they came for the first time and categorize the whole thing into four phases which were:Does Malawi has capacity to host the games?,Can Malawi provide some support services?, Can Malawi provide Safety and secure games? And the last one was can Malawi host the memorable games?,which he said,they are all being achieved.
Meanwhile, e-Swatini are leading with the medal list won so far,they have 5 Gold medals,Lesotho 4 Gold medals,3 Silver medals,Angola 3 Gold,2 Silver medals,Mozambique have 1 Gold and 1 Silver medals,the host Malawi have 5 Silver,5 Bronze medals,Zimbabwe has 1 Silver,9 Bronze, Zambia 1 Silver,1 Bronze, South Africa 1 Bronze whilst Botswana failed to get any.
The above medals were obtained in Taekwondo games.
The Region 5 Youth Games Lilongwe 2022 which was officially launched on 2nd December will finish on 11 December, 2022.

LILONGWE -(MaraviPost)-African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games which have commenced in the Malawi Capital, Lilongwe have not only focussed on sports development but also on issues concerning climate change.
This has been witnessed on Friday 2nd December, 2022 as six sports ministers from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa and Carols Mendes from Mozambique who is the vice president of the Region 5 Youth games launched the tree planting season and unveiled a legacy plaque at Nalikule Teachers Training College.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, Mendes said the initiative will play a great role in reducing the impact of the climate change as Malawi and Mozambique have recently been hardly hit by disasters attributed to climate change.
“I know our two countries have recently been hardly hit by storms hence regarding it necessary to plant trees during these Region 5 Games. This will help to bring back the degraded land”, Mendes said.
On his part Conserve with Benefit team leader, Collins Mittochi said, in line with goals of conserving the environment, they thought of donating 5,000 tree seedlings towards the exercise.
He has, therefore, pledged to monitor the planted trees so that their survival rate is high.
Stanley Mutoya, the Region 5 Youth Games Region Organizing Committee Chairman said,the plaque symbolizes a strong message from athletes and their coaches in the region on the importance of conserving the environment.
“We need to conserve and preserve our environment. This is part of our environment conservation sporting program where we are sending the message to all the athletes and all individuals in our countries that we need to conserve environment as part of climate change management strategy. So this plaque is a symbolism of our heritage preservation, so a message to everyone to plant trees.”
“We need not to wantonly cut down trees, we must avoid littering anyhow. The message here is that our environment needs us as its custodians hence we should ensure that our trees, our animals are taken care of hence in so doing we will have to do the sports with a human face”, Mutoya explained.
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda on Thursday, November 1, 2022 handed over the Region 5 torch to Mayor of Lilongwe City Councilor Richard Banda symbolizing the hosting rights of the games for the country’s capital city.
Handing over the torch Minister Banda said Lilongwe will benefit in terms of business.
Chimwendo said the region 5 games are so crucial because will help to bring forex in the country.
The minister said businesses including restaurants, car hire, accommodation and other services will benefit together with the national economy.
Chimwendo observes that through the games, Goverment of Malawi has bankrolled construction of a world-class Aquatic Complex that will be able to host any international competition.
“And this will be part of sport’s contribution towards tourism in the process bringing in the much needed foreign currency.
“Companies will also benefit on product placements, client recruitment, and new product or service introduction,” excited Chimwendo.
He added, “With the games in Malawi, companies will have an access to over 100,000 physical spectators with opportunity to benefit from media exposure as well as entrenching brand amongst youth to create life time brand loyalty and generation of qualified business leads for partners”.
The Minister also announced that President Lazarus Chakwera and Mozambique President Fillipe Nyusi will launch the games on Friday, December 2 at the magnificent Bingu National Stadium BNS).
Receiving the donation, Lilongwe City Mayor Richard Banda urged Malawians resident in Lilongwe to go in their large number and witness the launch.
The Mayor said security has been put in place to ensure residents and athletes are safe.
The Games have led to human capital development through training of over 400 technical officials who will thereafter raise the Malawi flag higher by officiating at other major international competitions.
The African Union Region 5 Games are so crucial to the country and that Malawi is expected to realise at least US$2 million (almost MK2.3 billion).
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-A-19 year-old Pakistan National, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Ubunthu Water company, Hussein Patel on Thursday, October 20, 2022 lived up to ignite the African Dream ahead of Region 5 Youth Games slated for December.
The young entrepreneur has donated 500 bottled water which is 25 cases to the Lilongwe 2022 Region 5 Youth games Limited.
Ubunthu water company is just one month old.
At the ceremony which took place at Lucky One Mall Complex situated at Gateway, the Pakistan Community also donated stationery such as 2,000 Exercise books,2,000 rulers, 2,000 ball points pens among others.
Speaking after handing over the donation, Aamir Patel chairman for Pakistan Community Association in Malawi, said their community came up with the donation after being approached by Region 5 Local Organizing Committee.
“This is not the first time made donations to communities as we have previously helped in Health, and Education sectors. After being approached by the Director and CEO of region 5 youth games,our community gave a go ahead to sponsor as much as we can towards the games.
“Our focus has dwelled much on Education sector which is the key for the growth and betterment of any country. Let me appeal to other companies, individuals and stakeholders to come in and help towards the games and help igniting the dream of the Africa”, said Patel.
Chief Operations Officer for Lilongwe 2022 Region 5 Youth Games, Lisungu Banda, described the donation as timely saying the company is looking forward for more partners to come in and help patronizing the games while Igniting the African dream.
“The door is open for everyone to come and support, we are lacking a lot of things towards the games in December, Internet, home village, water and other services which they can render to the success games”, Banda said.
Banda indicated that the stationery which the Pakistan community, Lucky One Mall complex has donated will benefit Schools surrounding communities.
Ten countries within the Region 5 are anticipated to patronize the games in December and over 2,500 delegates will come in the country.
Malawi will host the African Union Region 5 Youth Games from 2nd December to 11th,2022.This is the first time the Warm Heart of Africa will be hosting the games after failing to do it in 2004.
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe 2022 African Union Region 5 youth games Local Organizing Committee has tuned up preparations a head of the games in December with trainings of volunteers eye marked to help in the patronage of the games.
The trainings have started on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at the Bingu National Stadium which will be the command center of the games in December.
The volunteers have been categorized into clusters such as:Security,Technical, Marketing, Protocol,Catering among others.
Among the topics which the security volunteers are being trained on are as follows: disciplinary and code of conduct, Occupational Health and Safety, Dress code and personal Hygiene, Management, leadership, Roles and responsibility and Synopsis of volunteerism and Security Manual for Region 5 Youth Games.
Gideon Mwanza, Fire and Rescue Acting Chief Officer at Lilongwe City Council who is also the vice Chairperson for Region 5 Security sub -committee described the training as vital ahead of the games in December.
Mwanza said the volunteers will play a great role in as far as the Region 5 Youth games are concerned hence a need of training them as they are civilians who do not know some aspects of security.
“We know these people are not security professionals hence a need of basics in them so that they know what to do at that particular time.At the end of the two day training we wish to groom a volunteer who will perform security duties beyond our expectations”,
” There are many foreigners coming into this country during the games who will need our security, this training has come in good time,we believe by the end of the training they will be able to deal with real issues on the ground, as security we believe much on practicals”,Mwanza narrated.
One of the 60 participants, Patrick Kapalamula, hailed Region 5 Local Organizing Committee for coming up with the training for the volunteers saying will help them to execute their duties in a professional manner as they are imparted with basics of security.
“It is a good training as it will equip us to handle ourselves in a professional manner which will help to observe reputation and image of the country in the eyes of the foreigners who are coming”, Kapalamula said.
The facilitators of the training have been drawn from Immigration, Malawi Police Service,NIS,Fire rescue department among others.
The training which has started on Wednesday will close on Thursday, October 19, 2022.
Malawi will be hosting the 2022 African Union Region 5 Youth Games in December under the theme (IGNITING THE AFRICAN DREAM) and over 2,500 delegates are anticipated to arrive in the country.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As the 100 days count down before Malawi host the African Union Region 5 Youth Games in the Capital, Lilongwe.
Region 5 member States have engaged extra gears in their preparations as they set different targets and goals to achieve by the end of the games in December 11, 2022.
One of the members State is Zambia which said to be ready to ignite African dream and promote unity among fellow member states.
Speaking to Maravi Post from the Capital, Lusaka, Zambia, Senior Sport Development Officer and Podium Performance Programme National Coordinator, Thandeka Soko said are ready for the tournament and that preparations are going on very well.
Soko says Zambian government through ministry of Sports has committed itself towards the developmental tournament slated for Lilongwe in December.
“We are one among the three members who have already paid in full the participation fees. This shows how serious we are as a nation. The athletes are also determined and focused ahead of the games”,
“We want to help in implementing this year’s theme which is IGNITING AFRICAN DREAM. We are coming to give it fire Kuyipatsa MOTO. The way preps are going on we are optimistic to win medals in many sports codes”, said Soko.
She further said that apart from winning medals, Zambia will be aiming at building future teams in different sports codes that will be force to reckon with in Africa and World over.
About 320 Zambian delegates are expected to arrive in the country to partake in different sports codes at the tournament which Soko said it is the biggest number have never had in previous editions.
“The number of athletes is so huge for the first time in the history which shows how serious the new leadership led by President Hakainde Hichilema is in Sports development in the country”, she said.
Zambia who has been doing better in the previous editions the recent one being in MASERU, Lesotho are bringing in eleven sports codes namely; Athletics, Athletics VI, Boxing, Basketball, Football, Judo, Netball, Tennis, Taekwando, Swimming and Volleyball.
Before the main tournament in December, Malawi will host trial games from mid October.
African Union Region 5 Youth Games Chief Executive Officer Stanley Mutoya said CDM will be anticipated to meet this month of October with full data of all the athletes and officials who are coming to participate for proper logistics arrangement.

“We have gone far with preparations, the cooperation which is there with Private sectors,Ministry and other stakeholders is so overwhelming, just yesterday we unveiled our official Sponsor NBS Bank this means we are incorporating people who are ready to support us,other nationals are already in the country to support us,so everyone is linked up and we are equally ready to go”, she said.
Mabvumbe added that during the 100 days will look into the remaining areas to be tackled as well as holding activities while continuing with preparations.
“We will be supervising the infrastructure works that are taking place, making sure the equipment we have purchased arrives in the country before games during the 100 days and this will build confidence to everyone that we are ready to go”, says Mabvumbe.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Isaac Katopola, said government is committed and focused to host the Youth games and that the 100 day count down is the signal that Malawi is ready for the games.
“I’am delighted that we have finally launched the 100 day countdown to the Region 5 Youth games. This signifies that as a country we are committed in making sure that preparations are done in time and meet international standards required for the games”,
“We want to make sure that the facilities to host the games are finalised. You may note that apart from BNS which is ready, government is also constructing other facilities such as Indoor Griffin Saenda Sports complex and Aquatic Sports complex at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in the Capital, Lilongwe”, Kaputula said.
Over 10 countries are anticipated to participate in the Under 20 Region 5 Youth games slated for December 2 to 11 in the country and over 2150 people are expected to patronise.
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government says is very committed to successfully host African Union Region 5 Youth games.
Minister of Youth, Sports and development, Richard Chimwendo Banda made assurance when he faced the press in the capital Lilongwe on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 on preparedness of the country in hosting the games.

Chimwendo disclosed that the ministry has made strides in preparations that is optimistic of beating the October deadline set by African Union Region 5 Council to complete all the preparations.
He hinted that Aquatic Sports complex at Kamuzu Institute for Sports and Griffin Saenda Sports Complex are nearing completion.
Chimwendo added work has commenced in other sports facilities such as Civo Stadium, Silver Stadium, villages and other facilities that are earmarked to hosting the games.
The Minister further said,2150 foreigners are expected to patronise the games but he was quick to say the number may increase or decrease as the registrations are still underway until end October, 2022.
“Foreign nationals are eager to patronise the games in large numbers which will be a source of foreign currency in the country”, he said
Meanwhile as the 100 days count down before the country host the games The ministry of Youth and Sports and Local organizing Committee are anticipated to unveil the official Sponsor for the Region 5 Youth games, a local Bank which its identity will be known later this evening.
