Woman, 24, Stabbed Mother Nearly 20 Times, Told Cops She Did It to Herself

A 24-year-old woman in Arizona has been arrested after she stabbed her mother nearly 20 times in a brutal attack. After she was caught, the woman told police that her mother had stabbed herself.

The victim, whose name and age have not been publicly shared, survived the alleged attack that took place in a home in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Monday, February 2, according to a probable cause statement reviewed by Us Weekly.

Ashland Trinity Crank was taken into custody and has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and disorderly conduct with a weapon. She is being held on a $300,000 cash bond.

It is not currently clear if Crank has entered a plea or retained legal representation.

The victim claimed to authorities that the incident began when she told Crank to “get dressed.”

Florida Teen Arrested After Violently Bashing Mom with a Pork Chop

“When the [mother] went downstairs, she observed [Crank] seated on a couch, completely naked and wrapped in a blanket,” the statement said, per the affidavit. “The victim then went outside to the backyard/back patio area to clean up dog feces. While the victim was in the backyard, the offender approached her from behind and began stabbing her in the back.”

Police said that the victim suffered 18 stab wounds and lacerations during the attack, which included injuries to the back of her head, neck, back and chest.

As the attack took place, neighbors heard the victim yelling for “help” and called police. Authorities said that one resident added that they saw Crank “attempt to drag [her mom]” into their garage after she exited the front of the home.

“[Crank] attempted to close the garage door; however, the garage door did not close due to the victim’s body obstructing the safety sensor,” the probable cause statement said. “The witness provided police [with] an eight second video of the offender attempting to pull the victim back inside the garage.”

While covered in blood, the victim eventually managed to escape the home and collapsed on the sidewalk. A neighbor then told authorities that Crank attempted to perform lifesaving measures on her mother as several neighbors gathered outside to watch the incident go down.

When authorities reported to the scene, police did a sweep of the home and found blood throughout the residence, as well as “multiple knives in plain view” and a broken flowerpot.

“At least one of the knives was snapped near the blade/handle,” the affidavit stated. “The blade had hair and blood on it.”

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment, where she claimed that Crank had stabbed her several times. She also said that she overheard her daughter telling their neighbors that she had stabbed herself, which she insisted was not true.

“Several of the injuries the victim sustained appear to be in locations that would be nearly impossible for her to inflict on herself,” the probable cause statement said.

Police also spoke to Crank, who reiterated her claim that her mother stabbed herself. Crank shared inconsistent claims about the events, initially saying that she was showering on the third floor when she heard her mother screaming. However, she “later changed her account” and said she was done showering when she heard her mom downstairs “muttering,” according to the affidavit.

“She claimed a struggle ensued while attempting to take the knife away [from her mom],” the statement read. “During the protective sweep, officers also observed a small amount of standing water within the shower door track on the third floor. Officers noted the amount of water present was not consistent with the shower having been recently used, as described by [Crank].”

Crank’s mother told investigators that her daughter suffers from “mental health issues and alcoholism,” adding that she was planning to take her to a mental health facility around the time of the attack.

Idaho College Victims’ Families Sue the University Bryan Kohberger Attended

The families of the four University of Idaho students who were brutally murdered in 2022 by Bryan Kohberger have filed a negligence lawsuit against Washington State University, where the confessed killer was working towards a Ph.D. in criminal justice and criminology and employed as a teaching assistant.

The lawsuit, reviewed by the Idaho Statesmen, makes additional wrongful death and violations of federal education protections claims.

Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, just over the border from Moscow, Idaho, was obligated to control Kohberger as a student, employee, on-campus resident and school internet user, the complaint said, alleging Title IX violations, for which a private party may litigate.

What Bryan Kohberger’s Classmates and Professors Noticed After Murders

The lawsuit asserts that the school was aware of Kohberger’s unusual conduct, noting he was the subject of at least 13 formal complaints. The suit claims university administrators were aware of these complaints but did nothing to intervene.

The plaintiffs in the civil suit are Steve Goncalves, the father of victim Kaylee Goncalves, and parents for each of the four murdered victims.

Back in July, Kohberger avoided a trial and a possible death sentence by pleading guilty to fatally stabbing the four students on November 12, 2022.

The “plaintiffs seek to hold WSU liable for its own decisions and actions to remain idle in the face of known extreme and repeated instances of discrimination, sexual harassment and stalking by Kohberger occurring in its educational program,” the Statesmen quotes from the 126-page complaint, filed in Skagit County Superior Court in Washington. “… That ultimately culminated in Kohberger stalking and murdering the decedents.”

The lawsuit is seeking unspecified monetary damages.

Kohberger, 31, killed Goncalves, 21, as well as Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. All four were murdered in the middle of the night at their off-campus housing in Moscow.

Kohberger was arrested and charged with their four murders approximately seven weeks later.

Kohberger, as part of his plea deal, waived all of his rights to appeal and has no chance of being paroled. At his sentencing, he received four life terms plus an additional 10 years and owes more than $300,000 in fines.

The four families are represented by attorneys at Wagstaff & Cartmell in Kansas City, Missouri, with two attorneys in Tacoma, Washington, acting as co-counsel. “The information now coming to light paints a disturbing picture of institutional inaction in the face of repeated and dire warnings,” the families’ attorneys said in a statement to the Statesman.

“These failures were not the result of a lack of authority or available safeguards, but rather a breakdown in accountability and responsibility at critical moments,” the statement continued. “The victims’ families have come together with a shared purpose to seek transparency, accountability, and meaningful reform. This effort is not about vengeance or speculation. This is about ensuring that institutions entrusted with the safety of young people take threats seriously and act decisively when warning signs are present.”

The incident, which was contained to the single property, remains under investigation. Micah has not publicly addressed the incident.

According to a report by Rolling Stone, published on Tuesday, Micah was the subject of a restraining order obtained by a “Southern Californian woman” in 2017. Micah poses a real threat … and he has been violent with his own family members.”

The outlet included details of the alleged filing which claimed that Micah “approached the woman outside a church and told her he loved her and was convinced she loved him back.”

The alleged filing then claimed that a man “intervened on the woman’s behalf,” which prompted Micah to allegedly ask the man whether he had “a sharp object” in his back pocket.
