Lilongwe DC disowns Sylvester Ayuba James’ demos against Ashok for suing Chizuma

.………The Matter is still in Court

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe District Council has cancelled permission for the demonstrations organized by a grouping called Citizens against Impunity and Corruption.

The demonstration was targeting Ashok Nair who sued Martha Chizuma, ACB Director General over defamation.

According to a statement by Dr. Lawford Palani, Lilongwe District Commissioner, the permission has been cancelled because the matter is still in court.

Among others, the organizers want corruption suspect Ashok Nair to withdraw his court case against ACB boss Martha Chizuma.

Nair sued Chizuma for defamation following a leaked phone conversation in which Chizuma made a number of serious allegations, including that a High Court judge granted Nair– bail in exchange for a bribe.

This angered Nair who says his image and reputation have been battered; hence, his decision to claim damages from Chizuma through the court.

Meanwhile, the Blantyre Chief Resident Magistrate Court has set March 1, 2022, as the date when it will rule on whether or not to commence criminal proceedings against Chizuma in a case where Forum for National Development (FND) wants the court to summon her to answer criminal charges in relation to the same audio clip.

Chief Resident Magistrate Jean Kaira has been assigned the case whose application, according to the Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal, Gladys Gondwe, was already heard in the court.

ZOMBA (Maravi Post)—The Zomba Magistrate Court on Wednesday granted bail to Chancellor College Student’s leader Sylvester Ayuba James and two others. The three Student leaders were on Tuesday night arrested by Malawi Police and were charged with inciting violence.

The arrest followed unprecedented violent protests the students conducted which started on Monday and reached its climax on Tuesday. The students were protesting a recent fee hike which the University of Malawi (Unima) Council announced.

Unima council announced that students will from next academic year start paying Mk400,000 from MK275,000, a decision which angered the students.

Maravi Post has learnt that the students followed the normal process to stage a demonstration only to be denied permission, on flimsy reasons, by a ruling Democratic Progressive Party operative, Bernad Nkasala, who masquerades as the Chief Executive Officer for Zomba City

Noting that their voice could not be heard using the normal procedure, the disgruntled students nevertheless resolved to vent their anger on their campus until the uninvited Police came to interfere on matters they hardly understand.

Teargas canisters were sprayed on the students and this sent the students crazy. Running battles between the Police and the students then ensued with Dr Jill Biden being the victim of the whole chaos as her motorcade was denied passage on the M5 road where the students barricaded the road with burning tyres. She was to preside over a function in Malawi’s rural district of Machinga.

On granting the student’s leaders bail, the court demanded a MK10, 000 bail bond and that the suspects should report to their respective nearest police every Friday and that they should not commit any similar offence during period of trial.

ZOMBA (Maravi Post)—Malawi police last night arrested Chancellor College Students Union President Sylvester Ayuba James together with University of Malawi Students Union (UMSU) vice president Godfrey Pumbwa and the college’s UMSU representative Fiskan Nkhoma. The trio is being accused of inciting violence on campus.

“Ayuba James and the two others were taken to Eastern Police Headquarters here in Zomba for questioning over the events at college.

“Sources within the police ranks confidentially revealed that the questioning was just a formality as the main agenda was to arrest the students leader as the state machinery is looking for a liability over what happened yesterday with respect to students protests including the ‘US second lady motorcade hiccup’ at Matawale,” disclosed our source on Campus who later confirmed that their leaders were then officially told that they were under arrest.

“They have spent the night in the cells,” he added.

Students at Chancellor College on Monday and Tuesday went on rampage staging violent demonstrations against the raising of tuition fees by the University of Malawi Council.  The two days were fully packed with running battles between the Police and the students with the latter blocking roads and disturbing traffic and the earlier spraying teargas canister to quell the situation.

At the peak of the demonstrations was an embarrassing diplomatic incident to the Malawi government when the students blocked passage of the motorcade of of Dr Jill Biden, wife to USA Vice President.

Dr Jill Biden is in the country to perform a number of functions on promotion of girl child education. However, yesterday’s function was unfortunately postponed due to the volatile situation in Malawi’s old capital of Zomba.

Meanwhile, the College has closed until further notice and students were forced to leave campus by 4:00pm on Tuesday.
