By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi national football team captain, John CJ Banda, has officially left Mozambican club UD Songo following the expiration of his loan deal.

The club announced Banda’s departure on its official Facebook page on Friday, March 7, 2025. Alongside Banda, UD Songo also parted ways with Fopa and Jimmy Ukonde.

There are strong indications that Banda may return to his former club, Blue Eagles FC, as he has been training with the team since his return from Mozambique.

However, the midfielder has remained tight-lipped about his next move.

“Right now, I can’t say anything until the appropriate time comes. My representatives will reveal all the details in due course,” Banda said.

Blue Eagles FC Chief Administration Officer (CAO), Muhammad Ali Adin, acknowledged Banda’s experience and contributions to the national team, emphasizing that the club would welcome him back wholeheartedly if he chooses to rejoin.

“John Banda informed us last month that his loan contract with UD Songo would not be renewed, and I can confirm that he is back. As a club, we will have discussions with him to determine the way forward. Once we reach a decision, we will communicate it to all stakeholders,” Adin said.

He further explained that Banda initially joined UD Songo on loan from Blue Eagles FC.

Therefore, as per the terms of the agreement, he has now returned to his parent club.

“People should also remember that John is a police officer. As the Malawi Police Service (MPS), we will sit down with him to see how best we can utilize him both as a senior officer and a talented athlete.

“He is a national asset, and his contribution to Blue Eagles—if he remains with the team—will be immense,” Adin added.

Banda joined UD Songo in 2019 after a two-year stint with another Mozambican club, Ferroviario de Nampula.

During his time with UD Songo, he played a crucial role in helping the club secure the 2022 Mocambola Championship.

With his experience and leadership qualities, Banda’s potential return to Blue Eagles FC could significantly boost the team’s performance in the domestic league.
