Time for Bullets, Wanderers to build their legacy

For more than six decades, Malawi’s football giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers FC have carried the pride of Blantyre and the nation on their shoulders.

With rich histories, massive fan bases and consistent domestic success, the two clubs remain the heartbeat of Malawian football.

Yet one uncomfortable truth continues to linger, neither club owns its own stadium.

Instead, the two traditional rivals continue to rely on Kamuzu Stadium, a facility owned by government authorities.

While Kamuzu Stadium has been a historic theatre of epic clashes, the continued dependency raises serious questions about sustainability, business growth and long term vision.

These are not small community teams. Both Bullets and Wanderers are over 60 years old. They command thousands of supporters every match day.

Derby matches between the two easily fill up Kamuzu Stadium, generating millions of kwacha in gate revenue.

If five high profile matches can generate significant income, why can’t structured financial planning turn that revenue into a long term infrastructure investment?

The argument that there is no money simply does not hold. Gate collections from big matches, season ticket sales, merchandising and sponsorship deals provide a steady stream of income.

Instead of spending heavily on stadium rentals, logistics and operational costs associated with using a borrowed facility, a portion of match day revenue could be ring fenced into a stadium development fund.

Examples from across the region show that this is possible.

In Zimbabwe, businessman Shepherd Chahwanda built the 15,000 seater Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe.

The stadium now serves as the home of Hardrock FC, a club he owns.

If an individual can mobilize resources to construct such a facility, surely institutions as big as Bullets and Wanderers can develop structured, phased stadium projects.

Owning a stadium is not just about pride it is about business sense.

A club owned stadium means full control of match day revenue streams, gate collections, VIP sections, advertising boards, food concessions, parking fees and hosting rights for other events.

Instead of sharing or losing part of the revenue to rental costs, every kwacha would circulate within the club’s ecosystem.

Moreover, modern football is driven by infrastructure. A private stadium can attract corporate sponsors, improve branding and increase fan experience.

Hospitality suites, club museums, merchandise shops and training facilities can all be integrated into the project.

This is how clubs grow from being just football teams into sustainable sporting institutions.

Critics may argue that land acquisition and construction costs are too high.

But development does not have to happen overnight. A phased approach is realistic.

First, acquire land. Second, build a basic structure with essential facilities and a standard pitch. Gradually expand seating capacity as revenue grows. Even a modest 10,000–15,000-seater stadium would be a powerful starting point.

There is also the hidden cost of dependency. Every season spent paying for stadium use is money lost that could have gone into permanent infrastructure.

Over decades, that cumulative expenditure becomes significant.

What seems cheaper in the short term often becomes more expensive in the long run.

Supporters, too, would embrace the idea. Imagine a Bullets fortress or a Wanderers stronghold a true home where fans feel ownership and identity.

Stadium naming rights alone could attract corporate partnerships, especially considering the commercial value of these two brands in Malawian football.

The real issue is not money it is vision and discipline. With proper financial management, transparent fundraising campaigns and strategic planning, building a stadium is not impossible. It only becomes impossible when ambition is absent.

After 60 years of glory, rivalry and unmatched fan loyalty, the time has come for FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers to think beyond match results.

A club without a home is incomplete.

Bullets pour cold water on players release romours

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have moved quickly to silence growing speculation on social media suggesting the club has offloaded eight players in a major squad shake up.

The 2023 quadruple winners say the claims are false, stressing that no player has been released, whether due to disciplinary issues, underperformance or contract expiration.

According to the club, the 2025 season is still active and no decisions of that nature have been taken.

In recent days, online reports alleged that several senior players had been shown the exit door, causing anxiety among supporters of the People’s Team.

The names mentioned in the rumours include strikers Hassan Kajoke, Ephraim Kondowe and Bright Munthali, alongside Chikumbutso Henderson, Lameck Gamphani, Henry Chiwaya and goalkeeper Clever Mkungula.

However, Bullets management insists all the listed players remain part of the squad and continue to be considered in the club’s plans.

At present, the only confirmed departure from the giants of Malawian football is Nigerian striker Babatunde Adepoju, whose loan spell has officially ended.

Adepoju has since returned to his parent club, Venda FC of South Africa, after the expiry of his loan agreement with Big Bullets.

The club has urged supporters to rely on official communication channels and avoid being misled by unverified reports circulating online.

Bullets stumble as Karonga United stage dramatic comeback: 2025 TNM Super League

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Supporters from FCB Nyasa Big Bullets disrupted their bus after a heated TNM Super League encounter at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

The tension stemmed from the dramatic nature of the match, in which Bullets surrendered a two goal lead late in the game.

Bullets appeared to be cruising to victory after leading 3-1 by the 77th minute, thanks to goals from Blessings Mpokera, Mike Mkwate, and Babatunde Adepoju.

However, Karonga United staged a remarkable comeback, scoring twice in the closing stages through Benjamin Mapundi, Allen Chihana, and Alfred Chizinga, to force a 3-3 draw.

Speaking after the match, Bullets head coach Peter Mponda admitted his side’s defensive frailties were costly.

He expressed concern over the team’s inability to hold onto leads, especially against resilient opponents like Karonga United.

On the other hand, Karonga United head coach Oscar Kaunda hailed his players’ fighting spirit, praising them for refusing to give up even when the odds seemed stacked against them.

He described the draw as a morale-boosting result for his team.

In another fixture played on the same day, Civil Service United and Mighty Wanderers played out a goalless draw at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

The result saw Mighty Wanderers finish the first round at the summit of the league table with 35 points from 15 matches, just one point ahead of second-placed Bullets, who also played 15 games.

Almost there for Bullets!

...as Bullets dispatched Karonga in what could be a decider

By Lusekero Mhango

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-FCB Nyasa Big Bullets can already smell their fifth TNM Super League after earning a hard-fought 0-1 victory at Karonga United on Wednesday afternoon.

Patrick Mwaungulu’s header in the 7th minute of the game proved decisive in securing the vital three points for the people’s team.

The victory means Bullets are a single point away from guaranteeing a sixth straight league crown when hosting second-place Silver Strikers who are three points behind and need to beat NBB by a four-goal margin to snatch the league title away from Bullets’ grasp.

The encounter played at the Karonga Stadium in front of a mammoth crowd, saw the visitors who had gone four league matches without a win seize early control.

Yamikani Fodya had the first attempt on goal as his 25-yard direct free kick in the 3rd minute forced Karonga’s keeper, Sunganani Mponda, into a spectacular flying save.

Their persistence paid off in the 7th minute as Mwaungulu skillfully headed in a precise cross from Ephraim Kondowe to hush the home fans into silence.

However, as the first half unfolded, the home side grew into the game.

Victor Chilambo squandered a golden opportunity, heading wide after Elie Kayombo’s shot rebounded from the post into his path.

In the 37th minute, Hassan Kajoke missed a chance to double the away side’s lead, shooting wide after capitalizing on a back pass from Chilambo.

In the second half, the hosts, eager for an equalizer, began strongly, asserting dominance over the ball.

Substitute Tony Nyongu, a tall and lanky figure, posed a constant aerial threat after replacing the disappointing Allen Chihana.

Despite their lion’s share of possession, Bullets seemed more poised to extend their lead as Lanjesi Nkhoma and Kajoke both came close with efforts that tested the opposing defense.

Despite asserting late pressure to grab the equalizer the visitors hung on to the precious three points.

Meanwhile, post-match interviews failed to take place as the game ended in chaos as some Karonga United fans began to throw stones from the stands.

By Twimepoki Mangani

BLANTYRE-(MANA)-The highly anticipated, Blantyre Derby, in the TNM Super League between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers produced a 1-1 stalemate, on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium.

With the bragging rights and league contention at stake, the 72nd edition of the derby lived up to its billing with thousands of supporters packed in the stands.

Bullets had a fair share of chances as seen in the 24th minute when Eric Kaonga managed to tip the ball over William Thole however Peter Cholopi cleared the ball from danger.

With Wanderers regrouping in attack, the ball was passed to Sanudi towards the right flank where he launched a thunder bolt from 30 yards out to beat goalie Rabson Chiyenda to send the Wanderers supporters into a frenzy with a 1-0 advantage.

Bullets made changes at the half, introducing Precious Sambani and Hassan Kajoke for Eric Kaonga and Antony Mfune and in unison upped the tempo of the game in search of the equalizer.

Their effort was rewarded in the 58th minute when Maxwell Phodo equalized with a tap-in from Kajoke’s rebounded shot, with the Stadium largely painted red in support of Bullets erupting into joy.

In a post-match interview, Coach for Wanderers, Mark Harrison expressed satisfaction with the result while noting that the title is for Bullets to lose as they can only focus on winning their remaining games.

“It’s a derby a big game with a lot of expectations from both teams I can’t be upset with the result,” Harrison said.

The coach for Bullets, Kalitso Pasuwa said his team managed the game while highlighting that he anticipated a drop in form after the 60-minute mark due to their recent congested fixtures.

“We created chances in the first half while these guys got one chance and punished us. We however pushed and found the equalizer and managed the spaces in terms of defending in the dying minutes,” he said.

Mwayi Msungama was the match referee, he called 15 fouls against Bullets and 17 against Wanderers while waving off penalty shouts from both teams, the first when Yamikani Fodya challenged Gaddie Chirwa and another when Thole challenged Kajoke.

Bullets remain number 1 on the log table with 54 points from 25 games while Wanderers is second with 54 points from 28 games played.

Former Malawi president Mutharika lied on buying Bullets, Nomads buses…State house paid it all

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-This is it. The buses which domestic football powerhouses—Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers—got as gifts from immediate past president Peter Mutharika were not bought using his personal funds as announced earlier by State House.

Weekend Nation has established that the Higger buses, which were handed over to the two teams just a day before the fresh presidential election, were bought from Rashy Motors through a cheque amounting to MK300 million from State Residences.

The payment was processed through National Bank of Malawi’s Lilongwe Service Centre and the buses were branded at City Motors in Blantyre.

Former State House press secretary Mgeme Kalilani initially said the buses were bought using Mutharika’s personal money.

But he changed his tune yesterday, saying there was a communication breakdown.

In a response to a questionnaire, Kalilani said: “As much as I ceased to speak for the former president, I think I have to step in and clarify this because it is important to do so.

“Yes. Correct. The buses were bought by State House. Apparently, there was poor communication from the officer who was handling the transaction at the State House on behalf of the [former] president.

“When he was asked about the source of the funds for the purchase, he said ‘it was from the President’, which was understood to mean from the President’s own personal funds. But The correct position was that it was from the President’s Vote in the National budget handled by the State House.”

Initially, the former State House press secretary also said Mutharika had bought Marcopolo luxury coaches, but as it turned out, they were Higger buses.

On his part, Rashy Motors managing director Rashid ‘Rashy’ Gaffar yesterday confirmed having received payment “from government”.

He said: “I have been involved in this business for sometime and I can sell them to anyone.

“I got payment from government for the buses, but I cannot go into details, rather the information should come from the government… They are better placed to give out more details. I just supplied the buses.”

Football analyst Humphrey Mvula described the purchase as abuse of office by the former president.

He said: “It is not surprising that taxpayers’ money was used by APM to buy these two buses. Now that we know, one begs to ask the one million dollar question: Why did he lie?

“Additionally, the buses procured are not Marcopolos from Brazil, they are Higgers from China, another lie.

“This was fraudulent behaviour because he couldn’t have used government money on the pretext of being his own.”

Mvula urged the new government to ask the former president to pay back the money.

“I equally wonder how a Higger bus would cost K150 million each,” he said.

Mutharika made the pledge to the two teams on June 13 at Nyambadwe Primary School ground in response to the requests from the two teams as well as the Football Association of Malawi.

He said: “Funso la mabasi…. Mabasi tikupatsani lero. Bus imodzi kwa Big Bullets, bus ina kwa Be Forward Wanderers.”

However, the two teams did not get the buses on the same day as promised.
