Chilima to join Sept 21 CSOs’ anti-govt demos

By Special Mhango

Malawi vice President Dr Saulos Chilima who is also the leader of the newly formed political group, United Transformation Movement (UTM) on Saturday endorsed the anti-government demonstration organized by the Human Rights Defenders on 21st September, 2018.

Chilima made the endorsement at Gymkhana Club Ground in Zomba where he was launching his political group.

He also attacked the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for blocking the organized demos saying such acts are barbaric.

“First let me urge you stop fearing a person because of his or her political position. I also want to warn those blocking Malawians to go on street to immediately stop that as it is undemocratic. Allow Malawians to demonstrate against anything affect them as it is their right,” said Chilima.

He further said “I therefore endorse the CSOs demo and for your information, I will also join them.”

On other issues, the UTM leader attacked the DPP regional governor for the south Charles Mchacha for uttering bad words against women as well as his political group.

Mchacha described women joining UTM as prostitutes while calling the whole movement as satanic.

“Kunali anzanu oziwa kuyankhula koma lero alikuti? Learn to speak facts osati kunyozana. What are you trying to teach our children?,” he added.

He then vowed to change the face of Malawi if voted into power.

Malawi Speaker Msowoya’s fate with FND on Sept 24

By Alick Junior Sichali
The case in which Forum for National Development [FND] sued speaker of parliament Richard Msowoya to stop performing his duties of the post has been adjourned to 24th September.
Tuesday the High court in Blantyre, through Mike Tembo, made the adjournment following objectives filed by the defendant side.
State lawyer Owen Chuma said the Civil Society Organisation has no legal mandate to sue the speaker on behalf of Malawians.
Chuma told the court that FND has sued the wrong office in the case (office the speaker) instead of the attorney general.
“We made two objectives in the court, one of which was that Forum for National Development has no mandate of saying it is representing Malawians whilst the member of Parliament are the ones that presents the citizenry in the August house,” Said Chuma.
Lawyer representing FND, Bob Chimkango, appealed for the adjournment of the matter to a later date saying they had no time to review the documents submitted by the Msowoya side.
This was so despite the state lawyer, indicated that they submitted all papers regarding the matter in good time and that they followed the laws.
In June, the speaker who then was MCP’s Vice President announced his resignation from the party saying he will continue serving his constituents as an independent lawmaker.
Msowoya said Malawi Congress Party leadership is no longer standing on its pillars that it has been promoting for decades, hence his resignation.
During the launch of United Transformation Movement [UTM] in Lilongwe last month, Msowoya was amongst the key speakers of the political grouping.
Among others, he said the country is lacking political leaders who are visionary as well as patriotic.
After the speaker’s announcement to joining UTM, Civil Society Organisation Forum for National Development [FND] issued a statement demanding he should step down from the post.
The CSO says Msowoya has failed to lead by example, saying his joining UTM is a clear violation of section 65, which prohibits MP’s defecting from their elected parties.
Some people have questioned the motive behind the organisation’ grounds on the matter, saying Msowoya is not the first legislator to defect from his political party.

Saulos Chilima
Manganya-with-Vice President Saulos Chilima

By Patseni Mauka

Why is the United Transformation Movement (UTM) led by Vice President of the Republic of Malawi Dr Saulos Chilima spreading like fire? Why has the Malawi congress Party (MCP) emerged as one of the noisy opponents of UTM? The answer is very simple. MCP led by Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has been caught napping. They have been in deep slumber for four years and it has taken the roar of Chilima for MCP to wake up. The national issues that Chilima is highlighting are resonating well with Malawians of all walks of life. Continue reading The reason why UTM is spreading like fire-#MalawiVotes2019

Lucius Banda to Contest as MP on UTM Ticket

By Chikumbutso Crespo Mafupah,  MEC Stringer

Renowned Malawian musician who is also parliamentarian for Balaka North constituency, Lucius Banda, has declared his interest to contest for the position of Member of Parliament under United Transformation Movement (UTM) ticket ahead of the tripartite elections in 2019.

Speaking in an interview Banda who became parliamentarian for Balaka North under the United Democratic Front (UDF) ticket in 2014 said he is set for the 2019 elections but now under the United Transformation Movement where he argued UDF has lost the support it had from his followers.

“At first my idea was to work with UTM while in UDF just as some members of parliament from the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are doing, I then realized the Idea was not welcomed by UDF thus why I decided to fully join UTM,

‘’People in my constituency as well as chiefs have welcomed the move, and was surprised to hear that all the members of my constituency committee joined UTM before me and they are in full support of the mighty UTM,’’ added Banda.

UDF has lost the support it had in Balaka North, so come UTM Primaries I will contest and if all goes successful 2019 General Elections I will contest under UTM lead by Dr. Saulos Chilima” explained Banda.

Commenting on the development a political analyst George Phiri from University of Livingstonia said he is not surprised to see some of the UDF loyal members like Lucius Banda, Iqbal Omar and Shanil Dzimbiri defecting from the party.

“UDF died a way back in 2004 when Bingu left the party with all the gurus who where strong pillars of the party, and we knew UDF could not survive. The party is on the verge of collapsing” said Phiri.

UDF spokes personal was not available for comment as we went to the press.

Lucius Banda, Iqbal Omar and Shanil Dzimbiri made their first public appearance in UTM colors during the launch of UTM in Lilongwe, where Banda and Shanil endorsed the party’s president Saulos Chilima as a torch bearer of the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

By Nenenji Mlangeni
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on Wednesday invaded the premises of Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) in the capital Lilongwe asking the media house to settle unpaid tax dues or face closure.
MRA’s decision to pounce on the privately owned media has been viewed as political witch-hunt by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) due to the fact that the radio station has of late being covering rallies of United Transformation Movement (UTM).
In these rallies many speakers have been castigating President Peter Mutharika describing him as ‘Mchona’.
According to information at hand, MRA is demanding money amounting to MK1.7 billion from the privately owned radio.
The tax collecting body has given specific period for the station to settle the unpaid tax or face closure.
Earlier this year, MRA closed Times Group on unpaid taxes and many viewed it as political witch-hunt.

Chilima’s overly ambitious agenda; Naive idealist or relentless opportunist?

By Frank Kamanga
Listening to the Vice President Saulos Chilima’s thorough recounting of the plethora of issues and travails that Malawi is facing.
One would find it hard to believe that Chilima through United Transformation Movement (UTM) has actually a private-sector background and sufficient on-the-job experience to realize that the private sector has a vital role to play in solving some of Malawi’s more froward problems.
His ‘economic recovery plan’ aimed at ‘balancing the economic variables’ to ‘resuscitate the Malawi economy from its deathbed’ through his ‘12 Point Plan’, blatantly revealed his apparent lack of enthusiasm for and confidence in the private sector, which was very perplexing (to say the least) for the average Malawian who believed that Chilima’s appeal was rooted in his private sector accomplishments.
It would appear, nonetheless, that Chilima’s understanding of how the Malawian economy functions, how economic growth can be achieved and how to use it in order to create private-sector jobs is questionable or -at best- very rudimentary. Or is Chilima merely another run-of-the- mill politician, who says what people long to hear, ultimately speaking the so-called ‘language of the people’?
If Chilima is being honest regarding his ‘dealing firmly with pandemic corruption’ stance, by adopting a ‘zero tolerance to corruption’ policy, does it not appear odd that old corruption czars flock comfortably to UTM on a daily basis? One would even surmise that Chilima is too comfortable in the ‘swamp’ to try to ‘drain’ it.
As the saying goes, you are as good as the followership you attract; thus, do not expect Chilima to eliminate corruption or do anything serious about it anytime soon. He knows that he cannot achieve that without cannibalizing himself, his UTM leadership or his financiers.
If Chilima was serious about ‘taking the bull by the horn’ with respect to corruption, he would not fail to mention that there would be dividends from his painstaking yet laudable effort and that he would be well placed to know how to use those dividends more productively and -more importantly- how to incorporate those dividends into the economy (by lowering some taxes -for instance- or encouraging companies to employ, plough back, etc.). Unless, of course, he does not mean a word of what he says on the podium, which is most probably the case.
Ironically, Chilima, the self-touted champion of financial accountability appears more than reluctant to disclose the sources of his political funding. He insists that certain donors may not be willing to have their names publicised for fear of reprisals from the government…does he not know that this standpoint buttresses a time-honoured culture of secrecy which offers a fertile seedbed for political and economic misconduct?
If he genuinely wishes to be viewed as a transparent and credible leader, he must disclose the sources of his funding as well as his personal asset base; how can someone preach transparency without being transparent themselves?
What is even more farcical is the fact that Chilima refuses to resign from a government that he deems corrupt, ingenuine, retrogressive and nepotistic. He is part of the very system he so ferociously criticizes. Additionally, he is only throwing vague accusations, without actually pointing fingers to those he considers corrupt and without taking any practical action whatsoever.
Furthermore, he has created a party of opposition, whilst he is still the VP of the country! Nevertheless, he refuses to resign, which makes him both the VP of the government and the (conceptual) “leader” of the opposition.
This is unacceptable in itself, both as a political stance and as a cognitive continuum. He is either incapable of making any decision whatsoever or he is too attached to the lifestyle and perceptual gravity that come with the VP position. In either case, an individual that tends to switch allegiances according to his occasional needs/aspirations, would never make a great leader.
Regardless of whether Chilima and his UTM acolytes like it or not, the average citizen has every right to know all about the socioeconomic blueprint that they are planning on using in order to pull the country out of this vicious cycle of seemingly endless economic and social malaise. The fact that Chilima is reluctant to share any details regarding his socioeconomic template for fear that other aspirants may ‘steal’ the concept is clearly verging on the ridiculous.
Chilima has proven time and again that he is inadequately prepared and conceptually unready. For instance, regarding the ambitious ‘one million jobs’ prong, he failed to mention where will these jobs be created? In the public sector or the private sector? If it is the public sector, will this not increase the burden on the national budget? If it is the private sector, which industries and sectors will be favorized?
Generally, the private sector’s response to a policy change cannot be fully registered within a year, thus achieving this ambitious goal within a year is not only a tall order but an unrealistic pledge. Not to mention his ‘bullet train’… Is he aware of the amount of money that this would require? Let alone the electricity…Pragmatism is evidently not a word in Chilima’s vocabulary.
Chilima is the prototype of a micromanager who struggles to see the forest that the tree is in, but vehemently obsesses over the tree. Well, just like Chilima himself says: ‘Do not fear political leaders. Do not leak their boots. They must not be worshiped. They are not God’.
No doubt about that. This is also valid for the ones who relentlessly try to prove that their untested, unproven and unseasoned statecraft ship can change a country overnight.

Malawi Police gives VP Chilima seven days to provide info on alleged spy “elections rigging” machine

 By Nenenji Mlangeni
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- Reports reaching the Maravi Post reveals that The Malawi Police has written the country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima to provide information on alleged spy machine which is aimed at tapping the public’s phone conversations.
This come two weeks after  Chilima told the Masitha political rally in the capital Lilongwe during the launch of his United Transformation Movement (UTM) that government secured a spy machine to rig 2019 elections.
In a letter this publication has seen, signed by Malawi Police Chief Rodney Jose, VP Chilima has been given seven days to explain about the alleged spying machine which can also be used to rig elections
“In your speech you alluded to a very important piece of information about the purchase of a spying machine for purposes of rigging the upcoming tripartite general elections by some quarters.
As you are aware as Malawi Police service prevention, investigation and detection of crimes is part of our mandate and so are issues of protection of human rights for Malawians. Rigging of elections borders on human rights hence our concern,” reads the letter in part.
The IG adds, “Iam writing to you therefore to humbly request you Sir to provide more information on the issue at the earliest convenience preferably a maximum of 7 days within the receipt of this letter so that my office can institute a formal investigation into the matter”.
There was no immediate comment from  VP Chilima office on the letter on the demand to provide more information on the spy machine to  rig  2019 elections.

VP Chilima admits land scarcity problems in Thyolo and Mulanje

By Alick Junior Sichali
Malawi Vice President, Saulos Chilima, also heading the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has admitted that residents of Mulanje and Thyolo districts have a land scarcity problem.
Chilima made the remarks at a political rally at Njamba in Blantyre, launching his political grouping United Transformation Movement [UTM] in the southern region.
He said he supports the call from People’s Land Organisation [PLO], that government must intervene on the land situation that is in the two districts.
“I must say I agree with what Vincent Wandale has been saying on the issue of land scarcity in Mulanje and Thyolo districts not the issue of making the two districts another country, we need to sit down with all stakeholders and talk about the issue,” Chilima said.
The UTM leader said for a long time politicians in the country don’t talk about other issues saying they are very sensitive in nature.
But Chilima said sensitive issues are those supposed to be discussed so that solutions to the problems are provided.
He said if the issue is not discussed, the next generation will not have their own lands where they can settle.
During the rally he held in Blantyre at Njamba, the Veep assured Malawians that once voted into power he will involve all stakeholders involved to resolve the issue.
Chilima vowed to review some land laws once voted into power next year.
