Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima is set to deliver a thought provoking and enlightening public lecture on mindset change this Friday, October 30, 2020 at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

This will be the second public lecture that Chilima will be delivering after the first one on ‘Moral decadence’ at the Great Hall, Chancellor College in Zomba in 2018.

Spokesperson for the Vice President, Pilirani Phiri said all was set for the public lecture.

“The lecture is on this Friday and it will focus on mindset change as a precursor to personal development, national development and smooth implementation of public sector reforms,” said Phiri.

Phiri said all preparations for the lecture are progressing well adding that due to the covid-19 pandemic, entry to the public lecture will be restricted and all Covid-19 preventive measures will be followed.

“I know that everyone will be eagerly waiting to hear what the Vice President will deliver. Those who attended the first lecture in Zomba a few years ago will testify it was an eye opening lecture and this one too will be the same, even better looking at the topic,” said Phiri.

He said for those who cannot make it to BICC, they will have a chance of following the lecture live on Zodiak Broadcasting Station channels as well as on Mibawa Television who are offering live coverage for free.

“We are grateful to the two media houses considering that we are not using government resources for this event. He is more or less coming in as a private citizen to share this important topic with his countrymen,” Phiri said.

According to the programme that we have seen, the convener of the public lecture is Dr. Asiyati Chiweza, Associate Professor of Public Administration at Chancellor College.

The lecture will also include question time where the Vice President will take questions from the audience after presentation.

MCHINJI-(MaraviPost)-The governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central region vice president Uladi Mussa on Saturday downplayed fears toward newly formed electoral alliance led by Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima ahead of May 21 polls.

Mussa assurance comes a few days after four political parties namely UTM Party, Peoples Party, Alliance for Democracy (Aford) and Tikonze Progressive Party formed a block to tussle against seating President Peter Mutharika.

The alliance is expected to name its torch bearer on Monday in Lilongwe.

But DPP Central region VP Mussa popularly known as “chenji golo” said the alliance is non-starter arguing that it lacks integrity to win Malawians hearts.

Mussa was addressing the political rally at Kapiri Trading Centre, Mchinji North East constituency a long side Binton Kutsaira DPP Regional governor and other party officials.

He observed that formation of the alliance it’s a sign that DPP was a party to reckon with.

“DPP can’t be intimidated or threatened with Chilima electoral alliance. This just confirms how strong DPP is to Malawians.

“Based on developmental projects DPP led government has done, no party will dislodge us. We are pinnacle of development to Malawians”, assures Mussa.

Do you assassinate a person who is already committing suicide? UTM and  Chilima’s claims

By Lyson Sibande

Why would anyone want to assassinate Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima? seriously? Chilima is already in the process of committing political suicide because his political career dies in 5 months when his United Transformation Movement (UTM) loses elections. He can’t win elections. Do you assassinate an already dying person?

If there was someone worth killing, if at all that would be legitimate then it would be Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) before he confused his party.

MCP is a strong and well institutionalized party that despite the blunders of Chakwera’s leadership, the party has a very strong base of loyal voters who will still go to the polls and vote for MCP despite Chakwera’s blunders.

MCP has good prospects to get a good percentage of votes even when you look at registration figures.

Why would someone worry about Chilima and UTM? who are their voters?  Can you show me the voters of UTM on which to project their victory?

if it is about the crowds they pull during rallies which are really good crowds, then the question is who is not pulling crowds? everyone is pulling crowds.

There is nothing strange about huge gatherings in political rallies. That has nothing to do with winning elections.

All losers in the previous elections since 1994 were also pulling crowds. Everybody pulls crowds during rallies.

Chilima and UTM must stop overestimating themselves. Nobody worries about them. MCP has more than 2.6 million votes on which to strategize and project victory.

We cant expect that MCP will lose more than 1.6 million of those votes in the center and get less than one million votes in the elections. NO!  These are the real guys to worry about and think of killing.

I will repeat. UTM is full of incompetent young guys that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had no use for them and neglected them. They got frustrated and joined UTM to make themselves useful in some ways.

They are too incompetent even to cook and advance a propaganda. Are you sure even if DPP really wanted to eliminate Chilima they would stand by the side of the road and throw a bottle at his car? seriously?

Chilima says he won’t resign as Malawi VP

Malawi Vice-President Saulos Chilima, who is in the United Kingdom (UK) on private tour, says he will not resign from his post as the country’s second-in command.
His comments rubbishes the joint Civil Society Platform on Governance, which on Thursday October 18 called for the resignation of Chilima, accusing him of drawing a salary and benefits from government without doing work.
Chilima said on Thursday evening that he will not bow down to calls from some sectors of the society for him to quit his position as elected vice president.
The Vice President, who is also an interim leader of United Transformation Movement (UTM), said: “I will not resign because some people are holding press conferences. Let them hold the press conferences as that is their right to do so. They have the freedom to think or say any garbage but one thing is certain. I will not resign.”
Chilima made the remarks at Hilton Hotel in Northampton when he attended a dinner hosted in his honour by Diaspora Malawians.
“This is not about Saulos Chilima, this is a movement to make Malawi a better for all. Malawi needs all of us to change and the time is now.
“Asking me to resign will not stop the movement because I am not the movement. The movement is for the people. I am but just one of the people who believe in the cause for a better Malawi,” said Chilima.

VP Chilima admits land scarcity problems in Thyolo and Mulanje

By Alick Junior Sichali
Malawi Vice President, Saulos Chilima, also heading the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has admitted that residents of Mulanje and Thyolo districts have a land scarcity problem.
Chilima made the remarks at a political rally at Njamba in Blantyre, launching his political grouping United Transformation Movement [UTM] in the southern region.
He said he supports the call from People’s Land Organisation [PLO], that government must intervene on the land situation that is in the two districts.
“I must say I agree with what Vincent Wandale has been saying on the issue of land scarcity in Mulanje and Thyolo districts not the issue of making the two districts another country, we need to sit down with all stakeholders and talk about the issue,” Chilima said.
The UTM leader said for a long time politicians in the country don’t talk about other issues saying they are very sensitive in nature.
But Chilima said sensitive issues are those supposed to be discussed so that solutions to the problems are provided.
He said if the issue is not discussed, the next generation will not have their own lands where they can settle.
During the rally he held in Blantyre at Njamba, the Veep assured Malawians that once voted into power he will involve all stakeholders involved to resolve the issue.
Chilima vowed to review some land laws once voted into power next year.

A gospel that coddles the powerful Chilima

By C Sean Kampondeni

Having listened to the Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima interview on Zodiak, I see an elephant in the room that is worth pointing out and that nobody is addressing: Gospel Kazako treats the powerful politicians and government officials he interviews with kid gloves.

He did that with the president in December and has done it again with the Vice President in July. The entire tone, body language, and focus of the interviews is like that of a man interviewing his bosses, towing the line and lacking any real moment of uncomfortable scrutiny.

He even gives the guests the luxury of controlling the narrative of the interview, depending on them to supply the facts, like how he asked Chilima if he is clean and free of corruption, so that it was Chilima himself who supplied information about his involvement in the sale of a house that was alleged to have connections to corruption.
Gospel asked the questions, but came with no facts of his own to press Chilima for an explanation.

Just on this subject of corruption alone, Gospel could have stated what the VP’s net worth was when he declared his assets in 2014, then stated what that net worth is in 2018, and then asked him to explain the difference, but he didn’t.

Gospel could have stated how much tax payer Kwachas the VP and his office has expended in four years and then asked him why Malawians must continue to foot that kind of bill for an office whose impact is negligible, but he didn’t.

Gospel could have named DPP corruption scandal after scandal in the last four years and how much Malawi has lost, then asked the VP for an explanation for his silence when each of them came to light, but he didn’t.

Gospel could have referred to the recent scandal of how his boss received a 2 million dollar kickback from a company that stole from Malawians through a contract to supply food rations to the police, then asked Chilima to state if and when he knew about that kickback, what other contracts we Malawians should review due to suspicions that they were fraudulent, and why he has said nothing about any of it until now, but he didn’t.

He could have said, “when you say that we must condemn those who have amassed millions by defrauding Malawians when we know they had nothing four years ago, why don’t you lead by example and tell us now whose inexplicable wealth you have the courage to condemn”, but he didn’t.

Instead, all Gospel could muster to ask the VP was, “He who condemns something must come with clean hands. Are you yourself clean? How far are you from corruption?”

Similarly, in December, Gospel’s question to the President on corruption was, “Do you think there is rampant corruption in your government and do you think you are winning the fight against corruption?” That is all. Just think of that. On the subject of a terrible evil like corruption that is killing our patients in hospitals by robbing them of drugs, killing our young people’s futures by stealing funds for books and classrooms, killing our national sovereignty by diverting taxes to personal and party accounts until we are reduced to depending on begging other countries, that is all Gospel Kazako could think of asking the two men who preside over what is arguably the most corrupt Administration in Malawi’s democratic history.

Now, the broader question is: if an immense journalist like Gospel is himself unable to properly scrutinize those in power, what good news is there for the capacity of ordinary journalists to do so?

Inside Malawi VP Chilima interview with Zodiak TV; says ready for 2019 presidential race

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Vice-President Saulos Chilima on Wednesday evening partially broke his silence by announcing that is ready for the 2019 presidential race if duly democratic processes are to follow.

VP Chilima told the 45 minutes Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) exclusive interview that he will advance his transformation leadership agenda through a political grouping or sole in next year’s tripartite elections.

Chilima, 45, a devout Catholic, defended his association with the Church , saying the Catholic Church encourages its faithfuls to participate in politics but it cannot take a partisan stand to support a particular candidate.

During the interview,Chilima —who remains Vice-President until the end of his term next May— if he was clean from corruption as ‘those who seek equity must come with clean hands’ considering he has described the country as riddled with corruption, nepotism and cronyism.

In his response, the VP disclosed that he has not been involved in corruption but said there have been attempts to smear his name.

“I am very sure. There are two things; one is truth and one is evidence. I am very sure that I have not been involved in corruption.

“I know there have been references to an issue. May be this I should not be divulging here. I sold a house to somebody [Maxwell Namata] through an estate agency, but eventually turned out the buyer was a suspect of Cashgate. But I have never been engaged in corruption [without any fear of contradiction,” said Chilima.

Despite echoing his concerns about rampant corruption, Chilima took some time to recognize the positive side of Peter Mutharika’s government on several development initiatives such as malata and cement subsidy, community technical colleges as well as the reforms.

Chilima said there was need for Malawians to acknowledge government’s success in initiating the malata and cement subsidy which has brought decent housing for poor Malawians, adding the coming in of community colleges offers skills to young people.

“On reforms I would say we have not moved with pace. We have not performed as expected,” said Chilima.
