Police in Balaka are keeping in custody an 18 year old boy for allegedly offering for sell his 10 year old blood brother.
The suspect Sole Sekani, who is a fourth born in a family of eight wanted to sell his younger brother to a businessman in the district.
According to the Station Operations Officer for Balaka Police Station, Assistant Superintendent Gideon Chisale, the suspect Sole Sekani, offered to sell his brother to the businessman at a price of K1.9 Million.
“When the businessman heard this he told him to come the following day with the boy and then informed the Police who later raided the house,” said Chisale.
When the suspect came with the boy, he was taken to the veranda of the house where they started negotiating on the price and at this time, the Police were in the living room inside the house listening to the conversation.
“He even reduced the price to K1.3Million and promised to bring another one,” explained Chisale who was present at the scene.
Police later arrested the suspect just after their conversation following a long chase to capture him. Sekani has been charged with a case of selling a child which is an offence under Childcare Protection and Justice Act 2010.
Upon interview, the suspect said he wanted to sell his brother because he has a lot of financial problems which he wanted to solve.
Meanwhile the victim has been surrendered to his parents and the suspect is expected to appear before court soon.
Sole Sekani comes from Phimbi village, Traditional Authority Nkaya, Balaka.
