TNM rescues business journalists’ AGM with MWK500,000

Premier mobile network service provider has donated K500,000 to the Association of Business Journalists (ABJ) to help facilitate the ABJ’s Annual General Meeting in Mulanje this weekend.
Head of Marketing Sobhuza Ngwenya said TNM decided to respond to an appeal for assistance by the ABJ in line with the mobile network service providers’ cordial relations with local media.
“TNM enjoys strong relations with media, in particular business journalists who provide support to our various awareness initiatives. When we received their request, we felt it worthwhile to support them,” said Ngwenya.
Ngwenya hoped the donation would go a long way to meet various costs during the AGM which is scheduled for June 6-8 at Hapuwani Lodge in Mulanje under the theme; “Realising the value of business journalism 50 years on”.
For his part, ABJ Deputy National Coordinator Aubrey Mchulu thanked TNM for coming to the rescue of the business reporters’ grouping.
He said this year’s AGM will provide a platform for discourse on the role of business journalism in Malawi and the contribution the industry is making to the nation celebrates 50 years of independence.
“It’s not that ABJ and its membership have clocked 50 years, but we must be relevant. The idea is to debate and look back at the influence that the ABJ and business media in general has had in the last few years running up to the country’s 50th independence anniversary,” he said.
Mchulu said the ABJ launched in 2007 after operating as an informal network of passionate business journalists initially for three years. The idea of the grouping was mooted by some of the country’s award-winning business journalists who include Frank Phiri, Thomas Chafunya, Mchulu, Gerald Namwaza and Ayam Maeresa.
Professor Matthews Chikaonda, Chairman of Press Corporation Limited (PCL) which is listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange and London Stock Exchange, will be the key-note speaker and Guest of Honour.
