
GUJARAT-(MaraviPost)-Nearly eleven patients have died after fire razed Swarna Palace, a hotel temporarily used as Covid-19 hospital in Vijayawada, south-east India.
Vijayawada Police Commissioner B Srinivasulu confirmed the news on Sunday morning.
NDTV report indicated that the fire believed to have been caused by a short circuit started shortly after 05:00 with more than 30 people at the private hospital.
This comes after eight people were killed in the intensive care unit on Thursday in a fire at a private Covid-19 designated hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his deep shock at the incident and has assured to provide all the needed support to the survivors and families of the victims.
According to the announcement made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the victims’ relatives will receive compensation of five million rupees (£51,000).
Investigations have been launched to find out the exact cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, India has the third-highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world with more than 2.1 million confirmed cases and over 43,000 fatalities.
