AMAZON-(MaraviPost)-Catholic bishops across amazon have on Saturday proposed the ordainment of married deacons as priests in Amazon region during the summit of Roman bishops that took place at Vatican.
The development has come in due to shortages of priest across the area as observed in most remote areas of Amazon during communion sermons.Out of the 181 members who were in attendance during the meeting, 128 voted for the proposal while 41 opposed the idea.
Catholic program director, John Gehring described the development as an urgent crisis that needs immediate response. On the other hand, opponents of the idea described the development as dilution of church tradition and hence the need to reconsider the decision.
Pope Francis has expressed an openness of the issue. In his remarks, pope told New York Times that if the church is to make progress, there is a need for adopting some changes.
Acceptance of woman as deacons was another proposal that was put forward although it was never voted by bishops but viewed as a significant change if accepted by Pope Francis.
In his response to this proposal, Francis said they will continue to study the role of women in early years of church.
He was quoted as having said by New York Times: “we still haven’t grasped the significance of women in the church and their role must go beyond questions of function”
