LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-FDH Bank Cup Pachema returns into action this weekend as teams are anticipated to battle it out for the quarterfinals slots.

As it was in round of 32 of the prestigious MK90 million FDH Bank Cup Pachema fort night ago, sports fraternity in the country are expecting surprising and upsetting results as the cups takes it’s center stage.

In round of 32,Silver Strikers FC, who were the defending champions, were humbled by Dedza Dynamos FC 5-4 on post match penalties after regulation time ended nil nil.

Chitipa United FC from NRFA knocked out TN Stars, a Super League outfit.

MAFCO FC was shown an exit door by Changalume Barracks FC 2-1 with goals from Amadu Mapila,Emmanuel Allan and Yohane Malunga scored for the Salima based Soldiers.

Another surprise was at Mpira Stadium when Nyasa Big Bullets Reserve knocked out Mighty Waka-Waka Tigers and at Kamuzu Stadium Mighty Mukuru Wanderers FC survived through post match penalties 4-1 against Kamuzu Barracks RSV after regulation time ended 2-2 with the young soldiers coming from behind.

Never the less,the battle for the honours continue from this Friday as 16 remaining teams in the cup have been paired to find who qualify into the quarterfinals.Six premier division sides namely, Kawinga FC, Extreme FC from CRFA, Changalume Barracks FC, Nyasa Big Bullets RSV from SRFA, Kadona Stars and Chitipa United FC are set to write new chapter of the cup as they have chances to qualify to the next stage if they win their games.

On Friday,Kawinga FC from area 36 in Lilongwe are hosting Chitipa United FC from NRFA at Nankhaka Stadium from 1400 hours in the afternoon, while Extreme FC from Waliranji Mchinji will be up against Kadona Stars from Nkhatabay at the magnificent Bingu national Stadium on Saturday 30th July 2022.

Chifuniro Chimkokomo, Extreme FC Assistant coach, said they are ready to face Kadona Stars in the cup and vowed to progress into the quarterfinals to represent CRFA and Mchinji well. He downplayed the worries that they will be using BNS for the first time saying some of his players once used the facility.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets FC, Mighty Wanderers FC, ESCOM United and TP Mazembe player Luke Bruno Milanzie who is Kadona Stars FC coach, was also upbeat of doing well against Extreme FC on Saturday, citing they had successful preparations.

Central region football Association (CRFA) has however wished their representatives, Kawinga FC and Extreme FC a good luck.Antonio Manda, CRFA Vice General Secretary says the team is happy and excited that their two teams are the round of 16 of the cup describing it as a true reflection of how the best their league is.

“We are delighted to have them in the cup. We are optimistic they will sail through to the quarterfinals. It feels good for our committee as this shows that we are no longer minors.

“We are the strongest region with strongest teams. It won’t come as a surprise if these two qualify to the quarterfinals”, Manda joyfully said.

Sports fraternity in the country are expecting surprising and upsetting results in the cup. If one or two teams from the premier division qualifies to the next round and semifinals will be the true reflection of the competition if the previous results in round of 32 are something to go by.

Last time non- Superleague side reached the final of the cup in the country, was in 2014 when Zomba United FC under Alinafe Noel Gobede lost to Big Bullets FC Coached by Eliah Kananji 2-0,scored by Victor Limbani at 30th minute in the first half after connecting fabulous free kick from winger Fisher Kondowe before Mussah Manyenje added the second at 51st minute in the second half at Kamuzu Stadium in Carlsberg cup.

Hangover United FC now Blantyre United are another non- Super League side who reached the semifinals of Carlsberg cup after defeating two TNM Super League teams before they were knocked out by Mighty Wanderers FC.

Can these Premier division sides emulate the same in FDH Bank Cup this year and pull shocking and upsetting results?.

The answer to this question obviously will be known after round of 16 games finishes next month on 7th August, 2022.
