LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi national women’s football team, the Scorchers, has advanced to the next stage of the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers without playing a match.
This follows the withdrawal of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) women’s team.
The Congolese Football Federation officially pulled out of the qualifiers due to a lack of competitions and adequate preparation.
Malawi was initially scheduled to host Congo on February 20, with the return leg set for February 25, 2025.
The Scorchers, seeking first-ever WAFCON finals appearance, will now face the winner of the Angola vs. Zimbabwe tie in October later this year.
Despite the cancellation, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) plans to continue the team’s camping program.
The association is working on arranging friendly matches to make full use of the FIFA window.
FAM has assured that further updates regarding the team’s next steps will be provided in due course.
