NKHOTAKOTA-(MaraviPost)-Senior Chief Mwadzama of Nkhotakota says along side his subjects are saddened with the failure of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for not adding even a single constituency in the district.
Chief Mwadzama strongly believe that the area alone qualifies to be a constituency on its own basing on data collected from Zidyana and Mtosa EPAs which are within his area.
The chief added that added the area has a population of 104,385 people advising MEC to crosscheck the figures with Nkhotakota District Agricultural Development Officer (DADO).
But MEC Director of Media, Sangwani Mwafulirwa has dismissed the assertions of looking at the population of people as an entry point to demarcation exercise
Mwafulirwa observes that demarcation exercise was already dealt within the district saying the demarcation exercise was looking at the number of voters in that constituency and not there population.
In a letter to MEC Chairperson, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale with the title Nkhotakota demarcation exercise including Nkhotakota South East, Chief Mwadzama said after thoroughly consultations with his subjects, it was resolved that the boundary of the constituency must revert back to the old boundaries, Chilua to Chia and Lake Malawi to Mwansambo with Nkhotakota South East constituency returning to its original boundary, Mtosa ward boundary be as it is today.
The letter said in the event that the people of Nkhotakota have been considered for demarcation of the constituency, they proposed that Mtosa ward have a new boundary from Chilua to Lipsyodzi rivers and Mkaika ward from Lipsyodzi to Chia rivers.
The chief said given the liberty to change name of the constituency from South East, the people vehemently and swiftly came up with the new name of Nkhotakota-Mbonekera constituency saying this name has geographical reasons behind it and is also a monumental in nature.
“We proposed Lingodzi, Kachikho, Namasasa, Katundulu, Tokwe and Mbonekera schools to be considered as new polling centres, this will reduce long distances the voters travel to and fro the polling stations,” said Senior Chief Mwadzama..
