LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to arrive in the country Tuesday afternoon, March 14, 2023.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President and first lady Monica Chakwera are expected to land at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in the capital Lilongwe at 14:45hours.

Chakwera was in Qatar where he went to attend the 5th United Nations (UN) Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC’s).

The Malawi leader made his way through South Africa to carry out a number of bilateral engagements.

Chakwera has however been rebuked for staying outside the country while Malawi is in state of disaster.

Even Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) called on Chakwera to cut short his foreign trip to attend to the calamity that has befallen the country.

CCJP National Coordinator Bonface Chibwana observed that since many lives have been lost in light of the devastation by Cyclone Freddy, it was proper for Chakwera to return home.

The Commission therefore commended Chakwera for declaring a State of disaster in the Southern Region.

As of March 13, 2023 Cyclone Freddy claimed over 99 lives while displacing over 10, 000 households.
